To the admins of mastodon.social and mastodon.world: I respectfully ask you to consider amending your Server Rules to prohibit the publication of pornography on your instances. Flagship Mastodon instances such as mastodon.social and mastodon.world are easily perceived by many newcomers as central, general-purpose entry points into Mastodon and the wider Fediverse. That gives those flagship sites a particular responsibility. Flagship general-purpose instances should not normalize unexpected exposure to pornography, regardless of orientation. Pornography is commonly considered by many people to be harmful, offensive or inappropriate in general-purpose public spaces. People who want to view, publish or discuss pornography can already do so on other instances that allow it, or on dedicated adult-focused instances where users knowingly choose that environment. Content warnings, sensitive-media blurring and hashtags are not sufficient containment for pornography on large general-purpose instances. In practice, many users who publish pornography do not reliably apply content warnings, sensitive-media settings or suitable hashtags, and other users who do not want to be exposed to that content can still encounter it unexpectedly. There is also a legal and regulatory issue. In Germany and the UK, for instance, legal adult pornography is not simply prohibited online, but making pornography publicly accessible to minors without effective age-gating or age assurance is heavily restricted and may be unlawful or legally non-compliant. Large public social-media instances should not rely on ordinary Mastodon content warnings or media blurring as if they were equivalent to age verification. For those reasons, I ask you to consider changing the server rules to prohibit pornography on mastodon.social and mastodon.world, rather than merely requiring it to be marked as sensitive. This would not be anti-sex, anti-LGBT, anti-expression or anti-Fediverse. It would simply recognize that large general-purpose onboarding instances have a different role from adult-focused communities. A general-purpose flagship instance should be safe and predictable for ordinary users, including people who do not consent to unexpected exposure to pornography. @staff@mastodon.social@ruud@mastodon.world@jeroen@mastodon.world @bannanaente.mastodon.world @paul@mastodon.world@solarbranka@mastodon.world @mwadmin@mastodon.world @sokian@mastodon.world@Rooki@mastodon.world@SigurdVie@mastodon.world@Gargron@mastodon.social#mastodon #fediverse #pornography #moderation

@kawazoe@mstdn.ca@bachimusprime@estradiol.city @tharkonen@mastodon.social @admin@burnout.cafe @staff@mastodon.social Guys, do you not see that you are exhibiting exactly the kind of attitudes and behavior that you are also railing against? By trolling me because I'm arguing against the unmoderated tolerance of pornography (most of which I see seems to be homosexual pornography), you're behaving just like the people you say are suppressing you. So you're allowed to publish pornography but I'm not allowed to object to it? I will again misquote one of Aaron David's posts: "My dears, sexuality is like a penis. It's a perfectly fine thing for one to have and take pride in but, when one takes it out and waves it in my face, we have a problem." 😜 P.S. A NSFW tag is not moderation. Neither is blurring an image. Again, I have to say that @AaronDavid@mastodon.world is one of the reasons I don't just block mastodon.world entirely... People like him are the specks of gold that glitter in the dust...

To those who accused me of homophobia, let me say this: My concern is not with gay people, Pride, or LGBTQ+ expression. If ever the government tries to outlaw you, I'll be out there in the streets to defend your rights. My concern is with pornography of any kind being posted on large general-purpose instances without strong containment. Sexual content should be clearly labelled, opt-in, and kept out of general public discovery. That should apply equally regardless of orientation. Adding the NSFW hashtag, a CW and blurring images is not a sufficient firewall. I support free expression, but free expression still needs sensible boundaries so public social spaces remain usable for people who do not want explicit sexual material in their feed. People who want to post or view legal pornographic content should go to or set up specialist instances. @staff@mastodon.social #mastodon #fediverse #pornography

@Gargron@mastodon.social I ask you, Eugen, because I really don't think that allowing the publication of pornography on flagship instances like mastodon.social and mastodon.world is advancing the causes that were in your heart when you wrote the Mastodon software. Mastodon is seen by many to be "your baby". And thank you again for having brought it to us. But pornography can be published on other servers, just not on Mastodon's flagship servers (yeah, that post was from mastodon.world - my mistake - but I do see plenty of such posts from mastodon.social as well. Please consider banning the publication of pornography on mastodon.social And since you're almost certainly very influential with the administrators of mastodon.world, please consider encouraging them to adopt the same policy. Thank you for your time reading, and have a fine Sunday afternoon. 🙂

We are living through a period of serious conflict and political instability. In times like these, Free and independent spaces such as Mastodon matter more than ever.

That also means we need to think carefully about how we protect them.

Soon, it's going to be shields up, guys.

Hostile governments, commercial media, and Big Tech already look for excuses to portray independent social networks as unsafe, irresponsible, or impossible to regulate. One of the tools they are likely to use is age verification, especially where adult content is concerned.

This is not about attacking LGBT+ people, sex workers, artists, or adults who share consensual adult material. Nor is it about pretending that sexuality is shameful. It is about making sure our communities are moderated responsibly, legally defensible, and safe for people who did not consent to seeing explicit material - especially minors.

The Fediverse needs a defensible position: clear content warnings, proper moderation, separation of adult spaces from general public spaces, respect for consent, and protection for vulnerable communities.

We should not allow opponents of Free social networks to use poorly-handled adult content as a weapon against political speech, minority communities, activists, journalists, and ordinary people who need independent online spaces.

The goal should not be moral panic. The goal should be resilience.

We need to keep our house in order so we can defend what really matters: freedom of expression, political independence, privacy, democracy, and the right of targeted communities to exist openly and safely.

RE: @en3py@onlyarts.social

Correct. You only read part of the entire sentence, which actually stated the contrary.

But there's very little moderation on Mastodon. I actually got a reply from @staff@mastodon.social and he/she/they didn't even fully read what I said, before making a knee-jerk reply.😄

People on Mastodon get banned with no appeal. Multiple instances have now blocked my whole server, not just my account, with no consideration of *my* free speech.

There is plenty of violent content and speech on Mastodon - I know! I've been a target for it over the past hours.

And "wild discrimination"? Try speaking out against pornography and see what you get!
Bigotry, trolling, brigading, insults, distortion, misquoting... 😂

So, yes, maybe you misread.🙂

@PixelRobot@neopaquita.es I agree that we are not obliged to accept Meta’s business model, surveillance practices, profiling, or control over public conversation. I personally do not use Facebook or X or TikTok, and I put my own time and money into providing free, independent tools like Burnout Café. But rejecting Meta does not mean rejecting every moderation lesson we can learn from them. I did six weeks of training as a Meta content moderator, and most of the policies were well-devised and well-founded. The Fediverse should be better than Big Tech, not simply less moderated.

@staff@mastodon.social A couple more posts about this subject, then I’m stepping back from the pile-on that ensued. 😄 burnout.cafe has intentionally strict rules around pornography, gore, harassment, hate speech, exploitation, and shocking content. That is because I want Burnout Café to be a calmer general-purpose space. Other instances will make different choices. That's part of the Fediverse. But it is legitimate for admins and users to discuss where adult sexual content belongs, how it should be labelled, and whether large general-purpose instances should surface it by default. #mastodon #pornography

Discussion of pornography moderation
@robinadams@mathstodon.xyz Content warnings are not enough on a flagship server like mastodon.social, which the world sees as showcasing what the Mastodon social network is all about. So, my opinion is that it should not be carrying pornography. It's the kind of content that the commercial media point at and say, "You really want your kids to see this?" Mastodon will never go mainstream until it makes a lot more adjustments. "Free speech" does not mean you can post just whatever you want. There are limits. Ideally, I'd like Fediverse networks like Mastodon and PeerTube to be child-safe. But they're not, by any means. They're not even really safe for vulnerable people either. Basically, they're the Wild West on the Internet. So sad...

Discussion of pornography moderation
RE: https://mathstodon.xyz/@robinadams/116863257974541508 No, I don't think hashtags, content warnings and blurring images is enough on servers like mastodon.social, which carry the Mastodon brand up front in their name. Those servers will better promote Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse if they don't expose people to pornography, which many people would qualify as harmful, unhealthy or undesirable content. Mastodon is free software, and you're free to go set up your own server centered around whatever content or topics you like. But Mastodon's flagship servers should be safe for people of all ages (including children), including vulnerable and sensitive people. #mastodon #fediverse #pornography #moderation

Mastodon on Burnout Café just got upgraded to v4.5.8. Nothing special to report. LibreTranslate is working OK, but it is dependent on posters properly marking the language of a post. All you can say is that "it is what it is". Apart from that, Burnout Café is running pretty stably these days. The admin mail account admin@burnout.cafe had been getting hit pretty hard with spam and phishing mails. But then I upgraded the mail server with some good spam and virus checking, so all the harmful mail is getting filtered out. If any user wants a nice *@burnout.cafe email address, give me a buzz and you can get one for free. I'm going to have another try at getting burnout.cafe listed on the Mastodon project's suggested instances page. Burnout Café gets backed up everyday, is administered regularly, and is arguably a 'safe home for your data'.

After upgrading burnout.cafe to Mastodon v4.6.2, I started seeing intermittent 5xx/502 errors. The strange part was that the same page would usually load fine after a refresh, so it did not look like a permanently broken Mastodon route. The cause turned out not to be Mastodon itself, but an old watchdog timer keeping an external storage mount alive. It was running every five minutes, checking the wrong expected folder on the mounted Storagebox, deciding the mount was unhealthy, and then trying to restart the mount. Because Mastodon’s media storage depends on that mount/bindfs setup, this caused brief service disruption every few minutes. That explained why the site would briefly error and then recover. I’ve disabled the faulty watchdog timer for now, and the instance has been stable since. The v4.6.2 upgrade itself appears to be working normally.

@staff@mastodon.social I really am a supporter of free speech and free expression, but I *really* wish you would ban people posting homosexual pornography on your instance. Gay pride is not about publishing gay pornography. And it's especially a real pity because mastodon.social is a big instance and pretty central to the Mastodon corner of the Fediverse. I really do not want to block your whole instance. But it's a real nuisance trying to Limit those accounts. If people want to publish pornography of whatever kind, they really should join or create focused instances for that. Don't we want to cultivate a more "family-friendly" environment that will attract a bigger public? Uncensored pornography on Free Open Source Software networks is precisely what "Big Tech" points at when they say that only corporate social tools are child-safe. And yet we *know* that it's not the case. It's already a certain workload moderating a Mastodon instance. If we don't sandbox pornography, when why don't we allow gore and other offensive content? I actually did a some six weeks of training as a moderator for Meta, so I do have some personal knowledge of the range of content you could be exposed to if nobody moderates anything. #mastodon #pornography

@staff@mastodon.social Let me "correct my aim" here. I should not have singled out homosexual pornography. That was badly worded, and it made my point sound narrower and other than originally intended. A general-purpose social server should not treat all lawful content as equally suitable for public timelines. Pornography, gore, self-harm material, harassment, hate speech, and other high-sensitivity content are not the same thing legally or morally. But they all show why “just scroll past it” is not enough as a moderation philosophy. Some content belongs behind warnings. Some belongs on specialist instances. Some should not be hosted at all. That is not anti-free-speech. I think it's proper stewardship of a public environment.

RE: https://mastodon.world/@BoyGort2/116866732174338702 @Li@tech.lgbt Yes, absolutely, because my free speech didn't expire after one post. This should not be on mastodon.social It can be posted on a specialist porn hub. #mastodon #fediverse #pornography

Mastodon at Burnout Café just got upgraded to v4.6.2. This new version brings a new feature in Mastodon: you can set up your account to enable people to subscribe to your posts by email. That feature is not yet enabled, but will be in the coming days, once the new version is proven to be running stably. If you want that for your account, you can PM me, and I'll hurry the activation. The theming system in Mastodon has also changed. Burnout Café had a few CSS tweaks.... just so it really does look burnt out. 😄 But I'll probably have to refine that so the instance works well both in dark mode and light mode. If you encounter any issues, please do PM me. By the way, Burnout Café is now listed among the instances at joinmastodon.org

RE: https://yiff.life/@EddiDoUms/116863128161715928 I disagree. You support free speech, right? So I have the right to repeat that Gay Rights do not necessarily include the right to publish pornography. The right to publish pornography is not actually a central demand of the Gay Rights movement, as far as I know. 😄 There are actually gay people who are quite conservative in their views about that.

@puppygirlhornypost2@transfem.social @staff@mastodon.social @bachimusprime@estradiol.city Why are gore and execution videos any less acceptable than gay or other pornography? And if you allow gay or whatever other kind of pornography, then why not allow a lot of other things? It's a debatable point as to whether pornography is harmful and unhealthy. But it's uncensored presence is certainly one of the reasons why networks like Mastodon are not going to become "mainstream" anytime soon. Mastodon is not considered a "safe" environment for many people.
