I wrote a blogpost about everything I did in Phase 3. With this the text tool will be feature complete. This is a project that started in March 2022, and with Krita 5.3 slated to be released in February 2026, this will have been a 4 year project. A colleague of mine described text layout as a hydra, and said it felt as if with every update I did, I was chopping off a head. Playing around with compressing a comic page as jpegxl. Lossless is generally half the size of PNG, but still bigger than jpeg. Lossy is smaller than jpeg, 97 vs 122 KiB.

The compression artifacts are still there in jpegxl, but they don't seem as dominant around sharp contrasts, like in jpeg, so text doesn't get grainy...

Of course, I am now working at A6 size, so my text isn't small enough to get troubled by jpeg artifacts, but I am hopeful for other's web comics without grainy text.

This is a proper #SVG 2 text-in-shape implementation, with multiple flow shapes, subtract shapes, margins and paddings. The second (known to me) implementation of SVG 2 text-in-shape next to Inkscape!

Another highlight in Phase 3 is the Type Setting Mode. This mode allows on canvas editing of a number of text properties, as well as #SVG character transforms. With this, people will be able to do advanced typographic spacing, taking full advantage of SVG's strengths.

@svgeesus hey, sorry, not the color palette support for fonts. The css palette stuff is for the palette docker, that it can import css files as palettes. The font-palette stuff is on my mind, but I had decided it was out of scope for 5.3, as it requires a lot of careful work with the renderer and parser, and for 5.3 my focus was a good text tool with full SVG 2 text support. I'm glad you're happy with the rest though!
