Dolly Parton was someone who used their talent and work ethic to do genuine good in the world rather than retreating to a castle to try and ruin things for everyone else in this life. I went to my local library in the UK last year and was surprised and delighted to see signs for her books for children program extending even here, well away from her home country. Her drive to do good, to spread the joy of reading and literacy knew no borders. Compare her life to her peers in music and celebrity and she stands out as an inspiration to us all. On top of the child literacy program, she helped fund the Moderna covid vaccine, helping humanity in one of it's darkest points while other wealthy people were more interested in profiteering or like Bill Gates, fighting to make sure their donations can't fund anything that's public domain... Dolly just did what she did, no strings attached to anything but her guitar. Her music was good too. She will be missed.

The next time anyone says 'you can't tax the rich, they will leave!' just point at JK Rowling's ongoing attacks on vulnerable communities and weaponisation of the courts against charities and then ask them if they think any one person having that level of influence in a nation is really a good thing.

If someone attended a birthday party and started eating everything, unwrapping and stealing gifts, bullying other people and making threats to anyone who said no, you'd ask them to leave, buying an electric car company or writing child cop wizard books doesn't exempt them from playing nice with others.

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech They have no appreciation of the fact what they are doing is creating an AI version of mad cow disease for their beloved AI models by trying to slopify all open source projects. Their models rely on clean training data to 'improve' and their slop evangelism has polluted most of the major pools they were stealing that from, but they still want to pollute the smaller pools because they can't handle people not giving in to their demands.

To further protect women's sports, now the handful of trans athletes have been banned, the men you put in charge of the world are now planning to protect women's sports even more by *checks notes* banning cis women too. Who would have thought getting into bed with fascists would backfire like this? Well, other than everyone who told them over and over and over.

Elon pitched Hyperloop to try and stop high speed rail, Altmann started pitching crypto UBI to hijack and derail genuine discussion on the issue. Don't forget the stripmining of all human knowledge and culture from the 'ethical' AI people didn't stop because they got sued. They're just using third parties to source things, in much the same way their scrapers keep on returning to websites in a wide array of glasses and moustaches when told to go away. AI people do not, and will not ever care about consent.

@ptoothfish@beige.party If kids now had the childhoods of gen X and elder millennials, the people calling to a return to innocent years that never existed would be calling them thugs running amok, and for long prison terms for shoplifting and vandalism. The loudest people shouting for this lived blessed suburban or countryside childhoods, with lots of green spaces and horse riding lessons, they never experienced the city childhood, where schoolyards were tarmac and playgrounds and football fields were sold off and built on, while kids were left with brown field sites, bombed out buildings to play in that were never rebuilt, rotting spaces that used to be factories or train tracks, or used to be home to prefabs that still had the concete based amid the scrub. Places where the ground crunched with hidden glass that we were told not to play, but went because there was nothing else, the parks were sold so the only other option was to play on the roads where we'd suck in leaded exhaust fumes from passing cars and be subjected to unearned hostility, shouts of abuse for being too loud from boomers without kids. And then there are the absentee parents, working long hours, needing us to have house keys as kids were released at half three and parents at five, or later, leaving them fending for themselves...

You can't believably pretend you are a liberal fence sitter if you use the technology, we are well past the point where the drawbacks to be handwaved away. The most charitable interpretation is they want people to give them consent to do a thing they know is bad so they don't feel guilty. Usually though, they want to sell something AI related or stifle dissent.

Seems people are 'porting' games to the Atari Jaguar, using AI now. By porting, of course, they mean taking reverse engineered source code projects they didn't contribute to creating, feeding it to Claude until they get something they can screenshot or take a video of to get kudos online, then abandoning the projects because they ran out of tokens and have no goddamned clue how it works, nevermind how to optimise it into anything more than a slideshow without any enemies or features.

Just goddamned sigh.

@kaye@cathode.church The selling point for a lot of horrible ideas produced by modern tech companies is that they sound like they should work to people with MBAs and marketing degrees, people who care about the potential for massive, cancerous growth rather than something proven to work at a steady rate, and aren't bothered by things not working as well as the thing they replaced as long as they're seen to be on board with 'innovation'. It's the same hell that brought us video adverts and the disastrous pivot to video based on Facebook telling lies that killed so many websites.

When someone on the right parrots a blatant, provable falsehood that is doing the rounds in their media ecosystem, never assume they genuinely believe it. The vast majority are not that stupid, what they are doing is hoping that it will become accepted as true by people dumber than they are if it's signal booster enough, and that the world will be so polluted by small lies, the big ones will be harder to spot, as will the real agenda.

Look at how the right embraced the litter boxes in schools lie, everyone just knew someone who worked on a school who saw it, when nobody did, and that 'real fact' became a part of the groundwork for attack on trans healthcare for kids. 'Schools enable furries, therefore furries are widespread, therefore gender non conforming kids are everywhere and have easy access to pills and surgery, encouraged by teachers, doctors and social media, so that must be stopped, and trans care for older people too to stop the social contagion!' The attacks on all trans people was the point, the litter box was only ever groundwork for that.

If you want the seeds of inhumanity to grow, you need to fertilize the ground with a lot of bullpoop.
