@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz I remember our undergrad analysis lecturer showing us how to sum 1/n^2 using Fourier series then, in a fit of absent-mindedness, setting 1/n^3 as an exercise. He did apologize later, though.

@pozorvlak @peterrowlett @OscarCunningham Yes, ordering by divisibility is kind of neat - as you almost say, 0 is maximal. There are some fun games to play there (the non-negative numbers form a complete lattice), but maybe not in primary school.

@MartinEscardo@mathstodon.xyz I suspect that there are at least some people who think that when they find the 'right' axioms, the scales will fall from everybody's eyes and those axioms will define the right mathematics.

@peterrowlett Awkward, isn't it? If you allow 0, the lcm of any two non-negative integers is 0, which isn't ideal. I don't know if there's a clean way to set up the terminology if you want to work with non-negative rather than strictly positive integers.

@simontatham@hachyderm.io I don't know if this goes anywhere, but in linear algebra, linear (in)dependence is a general notion, while orthogonality requires the additional structure of an inner product. Is there maybe some way of using an inner product to give some kind of quantitative notion of 'desirability'? I don't know if this can be made sane in the software world, but it would be interesting if it could.

@robinhouston A relief, because it would have been very worrying if the biographer got that wrong. But then you worry about how reliable the review is in other respects. (Which wouldn't be a problem if it couldn't affect the livelihood/reputation of the biographer....)
