The piano part really completes what is already a stunning song.
Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison's singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again

Chas N' Dave - That Old Piano
That old piano, with old and worn-out keys
Just an old piano, with faded ivories
But it was a treasure
It give so much pleasure
That old piano
When them old hammers, bounced off off them old strings
You just couldn't help yourself, it just made you wanna sing
No question about it
We couldn't do without it

Finishing up tonight with a 1980s song about the Nore mutiny in the 19th century Royal Navy with references to the Jacobeans, William Pitt, Thomas Paine and Edmund Burke!
The Men They Couldn't Hang - The Colours
I am a member of the council of the naval mutiny
And no traitor to my conscience having done my sworn duty
These are my last words before the scaffold and I charge you all to hear
How a wretched British sailor became a citizen mutineer
Pressed into service to carry powder I was loyal to the crack of the whip
If I starved on the streets of Bristol, I starved worse on a British ship
Red is the colour of the new republic
Blue is the colour of the sea
White is the colour of my innocence
Not surrender to your mercy

Hey there, mister
Can you tell me what happened to the seeds I've sown?
Can you gimme a reason, sir

Yeah, where they fall from my hand

The Men They Couldn't Hang - The Lion and the Unicorn
I'll tell you tales of Kings and sailors
Puritans, outlaws, thieves and traders
Show you round the land we made
Whisper something we betrayed
So where's the hope and where's the reason?
Poisoned by the years of treason
Where's the justice? Where's the grace?
Disappeared without a trace
Who went mad, who drowned in drink?
Who's in a cage and who's extinct?
Who ended up in a uniform?

Lessons of history...
Frank Turner - 1933
If I was of the greatest generation I'd be pissed
Surveying the world that I built slipping back into this
I'd be screaming at my grandkids: "We already did this"
Be suspicious of simple answers
That shit's for fascists and maybe teenagers
You can't fix the world if all you have is a hammer
The first time it was a tragedy
The second time is a farce
Outside it's 1933 so I'm hitting the bar

Can we have retrospective personal playlist songs? This didn't come out till we left London for Wellington but that was probably just as well as Frank Turner was our last London gig and this song would have wrecked us, with departure imminent.
Frank Turner - Farewell To My City
I guess I got older, that’s how it goes,
And I know it sounds weak but I’ll still see you at shows.
I got tired of London, not tired of life.
I’m so sorry, my darling, to leave you behind.
We had a hell of a run there, but I must go down to the sea.
While you’re always changing, it wasn’t you, it was me.
Farewell to my city.
I’m just one more of your ghosts.
I’ll still see you at shows.
London,you can keep my bones.
So it goes, so it goes.

Draw a line underneath all of this unhappiness,
Come on now let's fix this mess.

Longboats have been sighted and the evidence of war has begun
Many Nordic fighting men, their swords and shields gleam in the sun
Call to arms, defend yourselves, get ready to stand and fight for your lives
Judgement day has come around, so be prepared, don't run, stand your ground
They're coming in from the sea
They've come, the enemy
Beneath the blazing sun
The battle has to be won

I could probably spend all night just posting historic-themed songs by The Men They Couldn't Hang!
The Men They Couldn't Hang - Ghosts of Cable Street
Like Caesar marching to the East
Marches Mosley with his men
Dressed in their clothes of deepest black
Like a gathering hurricane
This is the British Union
With its flag of black and red
A flag that casts a shadow in
Berlin and in Madrid
So listen to the sound of marching feet
And the voices of the ghosts of Cable Street
Fists and stones and batons and the gun
With courage we shall beat those blackshirts down

There's a bar/restaurant in Helsinki called Zetor, named after the Czech tractors. One of my favourite places when working there, they played a lot of Finnish music which, of course, I understood none of (bar the Finnish Country & Western covers) but I still loved listening to it. On a long overdue return visit after many years, I noticed they sold a CD. The barman was surprised to learn this when I asked about this, found a CD, concluded that EUR17 was too much for a CD like that, reduced the price and threw in a hat. I since learned that was not the actual official soundtrack CD but I still like listening to it from time to time!

For a guy who's 14 years younger than me, Frank Turner doesn't half write a lot of songs that seem to speak to my stage in life!
Frank Turner - Polaroid Picture
But in the stillness of the moment it takes for a polaroid picture
To capture our faces forever,
The world has turned a touch on its axis, and the only thing certain
Is everything changes.
...
So honey, I just need a little time to take a little time with today,
To savour all the triumph and tragedy, before it slips away.
So let go of the little distractions,
Hold close to the ones that you love,
Because we won't all be here this time next year,
So while you can take a picture of us.

When my father was posted to Ventiane, Laos, one of the cassettes we had was a compilation of songs by Johnny Horton. Even at that age, I figured that songs like this one were not normal country and western song topics!
Johnny Horton - Sink The Bismarck
For six long days and weary nights they tried to find her trail
Churchill told the people "Put every ship a-sail
'Cause somewhere on that ocean, I know she's gotta be
We gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea!"
We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss
We gotta sink the Bismarck 'cause the world depends on us
Yeah, hit the decks a runnin' boys and spin those guns around
When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down

One of the songs that got me through my first breakup. On the bright side, nothing else has ever felt that bad!
Big Country - Alone
It's not my life in those old pictures
The ones you threw away
For I was always someone else
And always far away
Walking in the darkest places
Where the mission meets
Waiting for the ground to open up
Beneath my feet
Alone inside my head
Alone inside my room
I feel alone inside my head
Alone inside my tiny little world

The London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony was probably the last I felt really optimistic about the future of the UK as it depicted a country proud of its past and achievements but also realistic about them and its place in the world and that was also the first time I ever heard Frank Turner and this song.
Frank Turner - I Still Believe
And I still believe (I still believe) in the saints.
Yeah, in Jerry Lee and in Johnny and all the greats.
And I still believe (I still believe) in the sound,
That has the power to raise a temple and tear it down.
And I still believe (I still believe) in the need,
For guitars and drums and desperate poetry.
And I still believe (I still believe) that everyone,
Can find a song for every time they've lost and every time they've won.
So just remember folks we not just saving lives, we're saving souls,
And we're having fun.

From a time when being an Arsenal fan was emotionally a lot harder. This would be my go to song after another of their occasional more abject performances, along with quoting Lt Colonel John Paul Vann after the Battle of Ap Bac and posts of wanting the Arsenal squad to lower me into my grave when I died so they could let me down one last time. Ah, fun times :-)

You'll take my life, but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket, but I'll run you through

Immigration New Zealand - Come On Over
So you’re thinking to make the move
To another place and time
The pasture just seems greener on this side
Will you come and take a ride?
We’ll dance all through the night
To the tune of the southern stars up on high
So you’ve packed your bags to fly
You could be here tonight
To start a brand new chapter in your life
Take a road trip down the line
Let the memories fill your mind
And the Southern Cross keeps dancing through the night
So come on over, come on over
To the land of the long white cloud and the southern skies
Where the locals make you smile
Come play and stay a while

First I knew of 9/11 was sitting at my desk in the office in London seeing a CNN headline email coming in saying a plane had flown into one of the WTC towers. I was still trying to figure out what that meant (Was it an accident? How big a plane? etc) when another came in saying a second plane had done the same. I then knew it wasn't an accident. I can still remember all of us in reception watching the towers collapsing on the TV.
Written as a tribute to the firefighters climbing the towers
Bruce Springsteen - The Rising
Can't see nothing in front of me
Can't see nothing coming up behind
Make my way through this darkness
I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me
Lost track of how far I've gone
How far I've gone, how high I've climbed
On my back's a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder, a half-mile line
Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising

Discovered this when I first started exploring Australian country music!
Adam Brand - Grandpa's Piano
Grandpa had a piano, it was built in 1904
He brought it down from Sydney town before the First World War
He'd sit down and crack his knuckles and put his glasses on his head
When he'd start to play, the cat would run and hide behind the bed
Well, his right foot stomped the pedals and his left foot stomped the floor
His wrinkled hands would skip the keys that wouldn't play no more
He'd play Onward Christian Soldiers and the window panes would shake
When the man of 87 played his old 88

China Beach was the first TV series to really bring home to me the passage of time and the inevitability of change, especially its fourth and final season where episodes cut back and forth between the characters' time in Vietnam and back in the US in the then present day - that everything we'd been was just a part of their lives.
So the theme song naturally stuck in my mind.

Nightwish - Crownless
Crownless again shall be the queen
Trophy on her grave still remains unseen
A boat on the river confessing the sins
The Riddler revealing the deep hidden things
Crownless again shall be the king
A gull covered in oil with a broken wing
A hitcher on a road alone and lost
Iron sharpens iron, a truth that once was
