Male code witch in Melbourne/Naarm, AU. Half of Hello Code, we make a thing called Exist for tracking data about yourself. Leftist. Trying to make a game too. Fuck LLMs.

My dude, if there are obvious moral and ethical implications, how are you able to "put them aside" so easily? I just don't get it

Gonna mute this thread now. That's more than enough being perceived on the internet for one day.

@viraptor I get that, but "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" doesn't mean we should just give up

I've built myself a web-based tile editor for my game. I really didn't want to have to, but what I need is really a glorified 2D array editor so I'm not editing the grid array by hand, and all the other tile editors I found don't work like that. It should be invaluable when the map is much bigger.

I have started many game ideas and given up pretty early on for all of them so far. The spirit is willing, the flesh is also willing, but the two of them can't agree on scope. I guess I should see it like each time I'm learning a bit more and making it a bit further... this time I've started making some tiles in blender, used godot's A* for pathfinding so you can click to move around, and have a basic day-night cycle going. Tile-based RPG idea has begun

Absolutely love how common it is for bands to be on Bandcamp these days. I hear about a band, I look them up in Bandcamp, they're usually there. Maybe later I buy some of their music. Good stuff.

@fn0rd that sucks. Definitely seems hard to avoid at the moment, but I hope that it won't be too long before the bubble collapses and it's a much easier proposition to find a less shitty job.

There are lots of racists in Australia but my home town now has the dubious honour of electing the first One Nation MP to the lower house. A good excuse to go back there even less frequently. Sorry mum and dad

@oantolin the analogy is not meant to be read as literally as that :) But if you want to be literal, I think it does fit - LLMs and breaking and entering do both give you stuff, at the cost of harms to others, and you don't have a lot of control over what that stuff is... Probably it's mostly pretty commonplace stuff. And if you keep doing it, eventually there won't be anything valuable left to steal

"The danger of this present moment lies in the fact that while the West’s narrative has collapsed, its capacity for violence remains. The American-Israeli axis, shorn of its moral pretensions, can still inflict enormous physical harm, yet this power no longer carries the weight of authority, since the world increasingly no longer sees its own future in the mirror of America’s present. There is no successor hegemon waiting to provide a fresh universalism, but a post-American future is becoming imaginable."

@Cheeseness I think you're totally right in your perception of their intent. And yeah, the end result still doesn't help anybody. If you've already ceded the ground that the ethics are irrelevant, in order to debate their practical value, inevitably you'll lose the argument on that point too. Well put!

@daedalus @vampiress I found the first few hours very slow and didn't get it either, but eventually it clicked for me once it opened up and I got how it was trying to do things, it was worth pushing through for sure.

It's tiring living in an American cultural hegemony, NZ literature edition: https://lithub.com/to-americanize-or-americanise-writing-a-new-zealand-novel-in-the-america-dominant-publishing-world/

I have been looking into how (Australian) e-scripts work because I don't like that high-value medication prescriptions are managed in a messaging app on my phone alongside random texts. It seems like I can get some useful info from the script url, so making an app that you can put your scripts into and see their info is viable. Then you can keep them separate and list them all by name, how many repeats left etc. But I have no idea if there's a need for this kind of thing. Plus pharmacists can already opt you in to an "Active Script List" and then you can manage them with the 1800Medicare app, so maybe that's enough of a solution. Or does nobody bother?

Anyway, Aussies only, how do you feel about e-scripts? (please boost for reach)

@aatch @fishidwardrobe sure, but doing that risks ceding ground and then losing an argument purely in terms of the practical value, I think. I'm not sure it helps https://mastodon.social/@Cheeseness/116265178062547556

@gren_lang@fosstodon.org congrats! I only found out about Gren recently from the Elm community. It's not summer yet, though, so I don't understand your version naming system. Or did you mean the summer that ended in Feb?
