@wimvdputte@social.vivaldi.net @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Slow and steady wins the race. Run fast and break things is the US model, and looking how the country is doing today, the last thing I'd want to see is the EU copying the USA way of doing things. As long as a permanent move away from foreign countries for critical and governmental software/hardware infrastructure is done eventually, then the EU will be okay.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu would make it kinda hypocritical to demand them to switch away from AWS yet have them support Google. On top of that, it's built on Android, and heavily relies on Google for software as well. This would still make it an American dependant choice, which wouldn't make sense when there's European companies that not only offer more phone variety, but offer it in both Android and Linux varieties that are more open source, like Volla or Jolla.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu In regards to my own experience, I have worked on Android alternative projects, as well as looking into and working with phone hardware. I have myself developed a prototype phone designed for ease of use for the elderly using Murena's /e/os as a base and hardening it's security a bit more. I wouldn't say I'm still a professional expert, but wouldn't say I'm completely unknowledgeable on the topic.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu As for it being "NSA proof" - although it might be from a software perspective, we can't say for certain that the hardware itself doesn't have a 0 day compromise or other failure the NSA either knows about or has ordered Google to install purposefully. In such case having the OS be dependent on an American corporation is already a security liability - the developer of Graphene is not a microprocessor specialist, nor does he own an X-ray array to fully check.

It is fair to say you are arguing in bad faith and have no interest in the truth, or in proper discussion itself. Therefore I will not bother wasting more time with you.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu The sandboxing is what makes it secure, true, but it also increases compute cost on the hardware as well as limits cross functionality. In Linux terms, they run Flatpaks with no Flatseal option basically, but also no system wide keyring. Again, makes it extremely secure, but limits the hardware it can run on - part of the reason it's only on Pixels. Also limits cross app communication - guaranteed privacy, but sacrifices function again.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu I'm hoping by "expanding AI capacity" you're talking about the old definition rather than LLMs. It would be nice if this is cleared up - one would not be a wise investment, but the other would be great news for STEM.

@martin Just because someone else murders does not mean we should murder. That applies to pollution too. Electrification and reforestation still lead to a net positive, even if another country still pollutes. China will eventually have their own reasons to cut down on pollution as well, such as the wet bulb effect since a good portion of the country is very humid.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu My guess is they might have some sort of contract that doesn't let them just move away from AWS yet without massive penalty. On top of that, the infrastructure needed for that is quite large, on the software side, so such a move would also take time. As for Graphene, although they've done good, there's too many issues with it for wider adoption. I don't mean bugs/glitches, but that currently it's limited to used / new Pixel Phones, which...

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Secondly, as I stated before, supporting Graphene would still be supporting the Google duopoly, because it can only run on Google hardware, and is reliant on Google's Android development, unlike the Linux alternatives from Jolla or Volla. Having software who's development can be shutdown by Google like Graphene is not wise either, if the goal is to move away from the duopoly. Sure, it's extremely secure software. But that ongoing security relies on Google still

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu It is limited to only Pixels. That is not false. It might not in the future depending on the Motorola partnership, but as of now and even next year and until more information is released, it only works on Google hardware. Not only that, but Motorola is owned by Lenovo, which recently has been caught with backdoors in their bios, among other spyware and rootkits done throughout their past history. Who knows if the most recent event will affect the partnership.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Ah, you mean incompatibility then. And which app are you talking about? There's many. And yes, there are compatibility issues with Graphene and other such apps due to business and banks not adding additional compatibility layers due to cost rather than "security", but the way Graphene is set up doesn't help either, in general. Even if they no longer required microG, the way Graphene is sandboxed wouldn't work for general use.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu I have been very polite thus far, so now I ask, link to where I can currently buy this "non Pixel" phone that has official Graphene support. Otherwise, stop lying in public, and accusing others of doing so, or be labeled as arguing in bad faith with no intentions of truth.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu iOS has a lock and is an Android alternative as well. Jolla seems like it'll have a lock or be relockable, but hasn't been officially released yet. Your commentary doesn't lend credence to you being a security specialist. Or if you are one, I hope the company you work for gets a second opinion. Not to mention a locked bootloader would be irreverent for well over 98% of the population since that type of hack requires physical access to a device anyway.
