Not we designed this incredible machine but it is constantly breaking all the time because we don't really know how to design amazing machines too good so we keep having to update the design. And also we're just going to keep sending you all these new machines because we're stupid. And you are actually entitled to access to our machine because you bestowed upon us your amazing support of merely using our machine. But also i can't keep updating the machine because somehow i have turned into a charity worker for people using my machines that i am such a massive ego head that i can't resist from fucking about with.

idk mare i think foss shite has shit a bit fucked up. Sustainable open source in terms of getting out the pan and begging is stupid. It should be more like here's a fucking machine that you are using in your processes, here is the schematic in case the supply chain collapses and we are unable to produce support, parts, and new machines. But unless you believe we're really inefficieent at providing that service then you will continue to pay for it.

@cwebber@social.coop No, don't use the one Lisp that closest resembles all of the things that makes Lisp so great like interactive condition handling and dynamic redefinition of the global environment. Use something that doesn't do either of those things and uses the least relevant part of lisp that only exists because parsers are a pain in the ass, s-expressions. What a Disappointment. Oh wait maybe tracing garbage collection is also in common. What a novelty. Ya i'm sorry but like comeon.

@cwebber@social.coop i don't really use Lisp anymore but it annoys me when i see the circlejerk and also like the complete lack of taste into the features that people promote.

@kirtai@tech.lgbt @cwebber@social.coop @aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place CCL is good. Also there's no way this circlejerk dude was talking about something like Fennel. If we're gonna buy into circlejerk from some hackernews guy like it's awesome then we can buy into gate keeping what the bar is to be a lisp that would justify this level of putting lisp onto a pedestal like it ruins your entire career unironically.

@andybalaam@mastodon.social I think AI needs to be approached with caution, and we have the usual ethical concerns with anything touching tech startups. But i think people aren't being thorough enough about the claims on productivity etc.

They don’t do what the billionaires claim they do: researchers found that open source developers were 19% less productive when using AI tools [Becker25], and a UK study showed no productivity gain [Kunert25].
n16, "We caution readers against overgeneralizing on the basis of our results. The slowdown we observe does not imply that current AI tools do not often improve developer’s productivity"

@lispi314@udongein.xyz @jonathanhogg@mastodon.social @kirtai@tech.lgbt I mean we didn't get here unintentionally. It's expensive and self sacrificial to invest a lot of time in infrastructure like programming languages and libraries (wherever you land in the stack) and make it very simple to solve the problems you are solving (and others to solve them too). It's also really hard, because not only is the problem you are solving an engineering problem but now also building the infrastructure to solve the problem. And the limiting factor is exploration not sitting down and hypothesising, researching, and cooking up some crap. Which yes is also part of the process too.

@lispi314@udongein.xyz @jonathanhogg@mastodon.social @kirtai@tech.lgbt you have to buy into an ideology of doing things this way. And if you're investing a lot of time in e.g. libraries for a given programming language, we already kind of know that our programming languages kinda suck and better be made irrelevant, so it also feels inefficient even when you do buy into it.

@jonathanhogg@mastodon.social @kirtai@tech.lgbt @lispi314@udongein.xyz and as someone who's spent a tonne of time investing in a certain stack to make things easier for other people to solve the same problem... things can wind up esoteric and difficult to onboard with (like imagine APL). It would unironically be quicker for them to use boilerplate even if long term that may not be true.
