June 10, 1983: I was about a mile down the Wilburne Ridge Trail when I realized that my exposed roll of film was still sitting on that outcrop in Rhododendron Gap. The trip back and forth to retrieve it added two more unofficial miles to my day.

May 6, 1983: My camera received heavy use this morning, as I traversed another group of scenic ridges with equally picturesque names. The six miles of trail between Neels Gap and Tesnatee Gap featured a long uphill climb similar to yesterday’s and some steep downhills, but most of the trail was nicely graded.

September 2, 1983: The trail descended past a water source called Hairy Root Spring (I know — sounds yummy, doesn’t it?) to the shores of Wachipauka Pond, the mountain tarn I had just seen from above. The AT crossed a marshy area and climbed over a wooded hill before dropping down to state road 25, another small two-lane highway.

I was amused by the ridiculousness of the situation more than annoyed by the loss of sleep. I had only been on the Appalachian Trail for one day, and already it was so much stranger than I had imagined. 🧵2/6 In my benumbed and dazed mental state, this simple entertainment was able to amuse and engross me for about an hour. Then, I got up and made breakfast. It had rained sporadically throughout the night. I had left my largest pan out beneath a corner of the roof last night, hoping for the best, and had thus collected three cups of scummy water for breakfast. I cannot complain. At least I had water. Dave and I were still full of a weird, punchy elation this morning.

🧵3/6 I personally felt as though I had passed an initiation or survived a rite of passage. I could conquer the mountain weather. We laughed and joked about everything, particularly the strange pathways on which our minds had journeyed the previous night. We had been given the heady gift of a brief glimpse of actual madness followed by a quick return to sanity in the morning — or, at any rate, as close to sanity as guys like Dave and me ever get.

Note: I'm finally starting to work on my hiking blog for my aborted August hike. I'll have a link soon. A hard fall on a steep descent cut short my plans for a six-week hike after one great week. This will put off my sequel AT hike until 2027, but there will be new hikes next year.

It was a cold, damp, blustery morning; Dave was treated to an invigorating gale blowing in through the edges of the hole and funneling up through the bottom of the toilet. He has all the luck when it comes to these matters. In Fontana Village, when I had picked up a bottle of baby powder to keep the jewels dry, Dave had thought it an excellent idea. He bought one, too. 🧵4/6 A sign next to the shelter read, “TOILET” with an arrow pointing out a path leading off into the woods. This became the butt of numerous jokes (pardon the pun). We speculated that its destination was probably a naked toilet sitting out in the open forest. Later, Dave was required to pay it a visit, and — surprise! — we had been virtually correct. It had no roof and just a three-foot-tall partition around three sides.
