I went to Walmart today, and I had to let a man who should be in a retirement home look at my receipt so I could leave, after buying something that needed to be unlocked and carried to the register. I drove down the road, and saw a McDonald's that was basically abandoned, as the entire parking lot was filled with a dozen or so homeless people camping there. Then I get online, and I see a video of a woman being beaten while carrying a get well present, seemingly for no reason. And the general reaction is "we need to punish the gosh darn animal who did this!!1" Punishing one guy will not save the next victim from another random assault. It will not save the next business from a massive homeless camp. It will not make it so I can buy stuff without waiting for someone to unlock it. It will not make it so an 80 year old isn't looking at my receipt when I try to leave. This is like suggesting you start taking an aspirin when you have stage four cancer. I can't believe people are okay living like this.

What they do is they just erase the person behind it, or they find someone else to credit for the discovery. Logical consistency does not matter to them, it's all just means to an end.

I don't really like the IAU definition being taken as law, considering... what authority does it actually have in anything? The vote was sketchy too, for sevearl reasons. Why do non-planetary scientists get a vote? Why was the vote held when there were fewer people at the event? The "official" reason I've been told is that there was a push for something called the "geophysical definition" which basically says "if something is round due to gravity, but it does not undergo fusion, then it's a planet." This "upset scientists" because it would mean the moon is a planet. "There would be too many planet!" I don't see this complaint with stars, or asteroids... But okay, restrict to so that "if it orbits another gravitationally rounded body that is not undergoing nuclear fusion (caveat, caveat, caveat, and etc. for the particularly pedantic), then it's a moon. Personally, I don't see why something can't be a planet and a moon. Now that is a fairly obvious solution and definition, however it would still mean we would gain a lot of planets, most of which were discovered by one American, Mike Brown. The rumor is that this upset a lot of the Europeans at the event (Europeans discovered Uranus, Neptune, and now Ceres, while Americans discovered Pluto, Sedna, Makemake, Eris, Haumea, and Quaoar), and so hence the really stupid definition they came up with (1. round, 2. orbits the sun, 3. if we feel like it really earned it). What's funny is that planetary scientists still call things like Pluto a planet in their papers, usually after a preamble talking about Dwarf Planets in the introduction.

I've not read / watched the Three Body Problem. My guess is that it involves aliens deliberately disrupting human achievements in science (I'm assuming one of them being a solution to the real "Three Body Problem" which is actually unsolvable)? People are talking about it again because someone shared a video of some maleware, made in the mid 2000s, that makes it impossible to model spherical explosions when using specific programs (likely to prevent them from making an atomic bomb). This is the logo of one of the alien... I mean fellow human organizations in the book. I think I need to read this book, lmafo.

I like how China seems to have two factories that make the same thing, but one is very good, and the other is very bad. Both are sold at the same price. The thing on the Japanese feels very true. For example, a telescope so small that it's totally useless, yet it's been lavished with an obscene amount of care and attention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9x-HYwPCRQ

I'll be honest, this is why I don't give a flip about "free speech" anymore. People like Ryry are in the majority now, or have the most people in power on their side, so why should anyone concern themselves with a principle that they've already abandoned? I don't care about preservation for the sake of preservation. Actually, I think people should go out of their way to destroy anything people like Ryry find important.

@Kalogerosstilitis2RevengeoftheJunta@poa.st Most of the nurses I’ve had have been Hispanic, White, and Asian. I haven’t noticed too much of a difference between them. Some of them were kind of rude, some were really opinionated about how things should be done, others are less careful, but it was pretty random. Something I’ve noticed coming from academia is if a place has a strictly enforced barrier of entry, that basically acts as an IQ filter, and then using racial stereotypes becomes inaccurate. You might see more or less groups, but overall they are somewhat equally competent. So in academia, you might get far as a student because of your race (as we’ve seen with the niggy leaks from a few years ago), but you are less likely to make it as a diversity hire in certain field that have high standards, because at some point you will be expected to pass some sort of qualifying or performance exam. The NICU nurses I’ve seen have had to work 12 hour shifts and constantly monitor 3+ babies. You have to deal with random visits from family, nervous parent, charge nurses, respiratory nurses, and various doctors and surgeons. So I am thinking that those who get through need to pass a higher bar than those who work with, for example, the elderly, where abuse is rampant and the quality of care is much lower, likely because visits from family and doctors is less frequent.

Having been in the NICU for a month now, I think that the nurses there are not all that bad, and the nurse hate I’ve seen over the years is seriously overblown, but maybe it depends on the hospital and the department they are a part of.

I learned more about this story today, and it's even funnier. The story everyone is told today is that a Jewish woman, Rosalind Franklin, took the first picture of DNA via x-ray crystallography. The gist of the problem is that things like DNA are too small to photograph, but if the structure is "crystalline", you can infer its structure indirectly through diffraction. Rosalind Franklin took these images, but they were "stolen" from her by Watson and Crick before she had a chance to study them, who then took credit for her discovery. This story is everywhere, and has been used to, basically, rewrite the story of DNA's discovery. Any text book on the subject of x-ray diffraction has a section on this, it's pretty much the "pbuh" of optics. But what really happened is that her grad student, Raymond Gosling (almost literally me!), took the photos. She thought they showed that there wasn't a helix structure, and so abandoned the research (and in fact, held a mock funeral for the helix model of DNA soon after). Raymond Gosling and Maurice Wilkins (Gosling's original graduate advisor and named mockingly in the "obituary") disagreed with Franklin. Gosling gave the photos to Wilkins, who then passed them to Watson and Crick, who correctly recognized it's structure, and advanced the research further. Ultimately the three of them were given the Nobel prize for their research. The actual issue is that they never got permission from Franklin to use her photos. At the same time, she didn't recognize what they showed, so much so that her own grad student decided to go rogue and smuggle them to other scientists. I need to look into it more, I'm wondering why she thought her results went against the helix model, and if she published her findings. I'm wondering if the issue is DNA being a double helix, vs. a single helix. the diffraction pattern would look a lot different, and so that caused her to write it off. Part of me questions if it can even be called plagerism. A person who was working with her, shared results with someone else he worked with, who then shared results with someone else he worked with. And it wasn't like the image was the "light bulb" moment for them, one of them just mentioned "well we happened to have a chance to see something she was working on". I should try to find the original paper.
