Many Australians believe that motorists “pay their way” to enjoy a transport culture designed primarily around personal car use. A new Australian study finds that drivers carry only about half the cost, with the rest borne by the public whether they drive or not: https://thefifthestate.com.au/columns/spinifex/car-owners-pay-around-half-the-costs-that-they-incur-taxpayers-pick-up-the-rest/

Car owners pay around half the costs that they incur; taxpayers pick up the rest

Many Australians believe that motorists “pay their way” to enjoy a transport culture designed primarily around personal car use, but studies show drivers only half the total cost of a system.

The City of Adelaide is considering pop-up bike lanes as a way to help more people ride safely through the fuel crisis: https://www.indailysa.com.au/news/just-in/2026/04/14/pop-up-bike-lanes-mooted-for-adelaide-streets

“a pop-up cycleway gives people who otherwise may not feel confident or safe cycling an opportunity to come into the city and feel safe while doing so ...

“The important part is that they’re flexible by design, so that means the infrastructure can be tweaked and refined over time to get towards an optimised outcome."

This morning was the second cultural burn at the Hillview bushland, and it was beautiful I have trouble fully putting my feelings into words.

Country needs care from people, and I am so grateful that Ronnie, Simon, and other Noongar people from the Mindeera group and beyond are willing to share their knowledge with us.

This ANZAC Day, I'm reflecting on the horrors of war. Many commemorations of war slip into talking about glory, bravery, and just causes.

I think that the best we can do for those who have suffered through war, as both combatants and civilians, is to face our history unflinchingly.

To be able to see the complexity of war, including the fact that it has frequently served those in power rather than deeper values of freedom and justice.

Lest we forget.

Today is the International Day Against LGBTQI+ discrimination. In WA, gender-diverse and queer people still lack important legal protections that are available to others.

Take the time to write to your MP and call for equality here: https://rainbowfutureswa.good.do/saferwa/mp-letter/

I had a great time joining the Lathlain Primary School Bike Bus this morning!

I spend time all over the Town, but I'm making an extra effort to get over to Banksia Ward during the budget process to ensure I have a good understanding of that area as well as my own Ward.

One of the problems with being on council is that I'm both much more aware of all the cool stuff happening locally, and have way less time to do it all.

On this Sunday alone, I desperately want to go to:
* The Jambo Africa Festival at Burswood: https://perthisok.com/events/jambo-africa-festival-2026/

* The Vic Park Collective's Community Movie Night!

* Westcycle's Glow Bike Night: https://westcycle.org.au/wc-event/glow-quest-bike-the-night-long-park/

* A collaborative game, Pass it On, run as part of the Vic Park Arts Month: https://www.victoriapark.wa.gov.au/events/pass-it-on/1760?c=122

A lovely reflection on the history and importance of public benches. It's US-centric but with useful lessons for elsewhere: https://placesjournal.org/article/the-disappearance-of-the-public-bench/?cn-reloaded=1

The Sweltering Cities report on people's experience of extreme heat is out, with a call on all levels of government to take action: https://swelteringcities.org/2026/03/12/report-released-summer-survey-2026/

Local government in particular is called to climate-proof suburbs with heat-aware urban planning and shaded transport networks, and by mainstreaming heat safety to prevent heat-related harms.

Over in Vic Park we've made significant headway towards electrifying our fleet. Especially for areas like the rangers, which drive a lot and don't need specialised vehicles, it's a win in so many ways. Much cheaper running costs, and a little less local pollution. Strange to see Belmont so behind! https://www.perthnow.com.au/wa/perth/central/city-of-belmont-called-out-for-lack-of-evs-while-backing-push-for-climate-change-support-c-22221391

** Item 11.2: 11.2 Response to the Elizabeth Baillie Investigation Report **

This report (with a staff response in attachment 11.2.1) notes that the unauthorised tree removals happened in the parkland, and "did not arise from a single decision or action. Rather ... reflected a combination of systemic factors that, over time, reduced the effectiveness of oversight and control."
