So then I said, "Yes, Chicago is a great city for shopping, but, I'm sorry, I can't help you get a visa."

Jon Corbly. Eastern North Carolina, the flat part, pretty close to sea level.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange And noise. There's a local breakfast place here with a great reputation. People line up on the sidewalk. Inside, it's a brick-walled box with continuous high-decibel music AND panel TVs. You cannot hear the person on the other side of the table. Painful. I don't get it.

@SeanCasten@mastodon.social Without right-wing gerrymandered control of state legislatures, Republicans wouldn't be proposing anything to increase alleged state sovereignty. It's not 1789. Why should a state have more sovereignty than a county within a state? When 21st century anti-democratic extremists leverage claims of state sovereignty to attack rights, as they did in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, they're attacking the legitimacy of the US.

@mcnado@mstdn.social The alleged rights of states have been used as a safe harbor for Americans opposed to US democracy since the nation's creation. It's the reason the Declaration of Independence was issued without its draft grievance against Britain's establishment of slavery in North America. It's the reason hundreds of thousands of Americans were killed by pro-slavery traitors. It's the reason for Jim Crow and its successor, the Roberts Court. State rights are the armory for fearful white men.

@tezoatlipoca@mas.to It's the people behind that site lying. They've paid to have their site display that lying message when an ad browser is detected. Once they've identified themselves as liars, why would they expect to be believed by anyone who disabled their adblocker?

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social You can't do journalism when the people who own the business want to sell ad-luring "content" and don't care if it's journalism or gibberish. The sites I've walked away from after they've switched to AI produce posts so awful and pointless and weird that it's obvious that they're only targeting clicks from the junk sites that litter Google search results.

@scalzi The first film's success opened the door to more films and the "New Hope" label. The rather odd of idea of making prequels to provide backstory for "Star Wars" triggered the name change. That backstory might have been provided via flashbacks in sequel films.

@georgetakei@universeodon.com Inside US borders, the FBI is responsible for counterintelligence. So if the FBI director is personally involved in firing people, he really ought to know what kind of expertise he's kicking out the door. And he really should have sense enough to refresh his memory on that before showing up to a hearing he knows will ask about the dismissals. Unless, of course, he's an arrogant fraud.

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Apparently, the answer is "No, I can't use Gmail with Kmail in Plasma 6". Booted the current Fedora 40 nightly KDE ISO. Using "Online Accounts" did not set up my Gmail account in Kmail. Kmail found the account in Mozilla's database when I tried to create it directly in Kmail. I was led through a dialog that ended with a display of server info with a "Previous" and a "Quit" button. The account was not created. #KDE #Plasma6

@TechDesk Might be useful, might not be. Might not happen at all. Why, though, the tech media assumption that a change to a software product is always something for users to look forward to? Sometimes, a product is just "done" from a user point of view. At that point, new capabilities will be pointless inanities or efforts to exploit users.

@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social I tried it on Fedora 40 with Plasma 6. Don't know if it's broken there or not. In any case, the account wizard repeatedly showed me a screen with only a back and quit button when the account hadn't yet been created. Also kept telling me I had set up 2 accounts and asking if I'd like to unify them.

@feditips@mstdn.social That's a weakness. If users want to see everything posted by an account they follow, they should not need to find that account's profile page and go looking. Especially for time sensitive matters and events. If I follow someone specifically to see their posts about a news event, I want to see them in my timeline, along with posts from the other accounts I follow for the same reason.

@taylorlorenz Age verification laws are a step in the direction of governments banning individuals from using computers, i.e., effectively licensing computer use. The core of the right wing is the conviction that behavior must be controlled, that the exercise of rights must be constricted, not protected and expanded. When age checks fail, some legislators will begin thinking about requiring logins to be vetted against national registries "proving" age.

@TheFinn@discuss.tchncs.Gmail may have worked with Kmail occasionally in the past. I think sometimes that involved going back to your Google account and telling it to accept an "unsecure" app. To be honest, I wouldn't do that for an email app. Elementary has the same problem with its mail app.
