@Rasterman@detroitriotcity.com Nintendo is very weird with their release schedules: some franchises have a strict One Game Per Console policy, like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Others get a steady stream of new releases like Kirby and Fire Emblem. And then you have Metroid and F-Zero, who went through periods of such frequent releases that it caused gamer burnouts (look at how many F-Zero games we got during the GCN/GBA era), and who then got iced because the last entry sold poorly. You could argue that something similar also happened to the New Super Mario Bros. games.
A new high quality game every 3-4 year might be ideal, especially if the franchise has a strong 2D *AND* 3D presence, so you effectively get a new game every other year.

@TrueMasterCole@poa.st @Rasterman@detroitriotcity.com Things are much better now tho for people wanting to get into 2D Metroid - ahead of Dread coming out I replayed all the mainline games except Samus Returns (which was fresher in my mind and also a longer game), and in order to do so I had to do stuff like play Metroid Fusion on my Ambassador 3DS and play Zero Mission on my fucking Launch DS.
If I decide to do something similar ahead of Ravenous, I can simply play 4 out of the 5 mainline 2D Metroids on my Switch 2 (actually, I could technically access all 5 of them, but the Game Boy version of Metroid II isn't all that enticing...).
