🚨 New @amnesty@mastox.eu research shows how @Meta failed to effectively moderate anti-LGBTI content on @facebook, the main social media platform in Hungary, even when reported. Head of Big Tech Accountability Team @amnesty@mastox.eu Alia Al Ghussain, explains how this affects the LGBTI community.

We’ve joined 140+ organisations in calling on @EU_Commission President @vonderleyen to ensure tech companies prove their products are safe & age-appropriate before they reach children.
Design for safety not exploitation.
France is the first country in Europe to pass a law banning children under 15 from social media.
@amnesty@mastox.eu we believe bans alone without any requirements to change the underlying algorithms & addictive features won’t make platforms safe for children.
Meta reached an $18 billion settlement with US states over child safety & committed to make design changes to its social media apps.
This is a turning point not just for Meta but all social media. They must fix their harmful features to protect children.
The UK Supreme Court has rejected Bahrain's bid to block a UK lawsuit brought by two activists over alleged spyware use. The ruling should serve as a signal that states may no longer be able to hide behind claims of sovereign immunity.

🚨NEW: The expanded use of AI-driven surveillance in Argentina during the first two years of the Javier Milei’s administration reinforces a techno-authoritarian infrastructure of social control.

Banning teenagers from accessing social media is not the answer. It is the responsibility of tech companies to overhaul the built-in addictive & manipulative design of leading social media platforms and AI chatbots to respect children’s rights and safety.
.@amnesty@mastox.eu is asking Meta to act now: strengthen safeguards, respond quickly to harmful content & ensure its platforms do not contribute to human rights abuses in Bangladesh.
🚨 "I have no doubt the internet killed my daughter."
The words of Ian Russell, the father of Molly, a British teenage girl who took her own life after exposure to harmful content giving a eulogy in a film about her life released today by @Channel4.
This highly invasive spyware is fundamentally incompatible with human rights. Once installed, Predator spyware can gain total access to data stored on or transmitted from a target’s device including encrypted messaging apps, emails, device locations, contacts & call logs.
🚨NEWS: The EU's Special Panel on Child Safety Online is right to recommend further action to tackle the harmful design of social media platforms, emphasizing the need for children to participate in a safe online environment.

🚨 "I feel naked.”
A new @amnesty@mastox.eu investigation has established that prominent Angolan journalist Teixeira Cândido, was targeted with Intellexa’s Predator spyware in 2024.
This is the first forensic confirmation of its use in Angola.

Around the world, misinformation, disinformation, incitement & coordinated harassment on social media have fuelled real-world discrimination, violence & other human rights abuses. In Bangladesh this could heighten the risk of sectarian violence.
RT: @Hannah_e_Storey It has been a big week for documentaries exposing the harms of social media algorithms - Molly vs the Machines, Louis Theroux’s Inside the Manosphere, and now Inside the Rage Machine reveals leaked internal documents - pulling back the curtain on how these systems really work.
🚨Rising harmful online content in Bangladesh, including misinformation & sectarian narratives targeting minority communities could result in serious human rights abuses if left unaddressed. Online harms do not stay online. They are real & cause harm.
The EU institutions & member states should now focus their efforts on supporting a robust common framework of digital regulation, by ensuring the effective implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the DSA, the AI Act and the forthcoming DFA.
The fact that @Meta's moderation system failed to catch more than half of @amnesty@mastox.eu election-related disinformation ads shows that @Meta is not doing enough to prevent its platform from being a vector of disinformation.

@amnesty@mastox.eu's research has shown that the deployment of harmful technologies such as facial recognition and automation in the public sector have threatened the right to privacy and social protection in India and have led to discrimination and exclusion of marginalized communities.
🚨The AI Summit in India failed to rein in destructive practices of governments & tech companies. The rhetoric stood in stark contrast with the realities of harmful deployment of AI systems in India powering a state-led agenda of authoritarian practices.

Argentina is joining a global wave of techno-authoritarianism.
The authorities must ban the development, production, sale, and use of remote biometric recognition technologies for mass and targeted discriminatory surveillance.
The Summit’s push on sovereignty, innovation and ‘democratisation’ feeds a global trend of turning AI into a race predicated on power accumulation and economic growth at all costs, rather than the collective global action needed to interrupt this.
The spyware attack was delivered via WhatsApp messages by an unknown contact who repeatedly contacted him during his time as the Secretary General of the Syndicate of Angolan Journalists.
Ahead of Brazil’s presidential elections, we carried out a social media experiment to test @facebook's moderation of ads containing election-related disinformation. We found moderation weaknesses.
@amnesty@mastox.eu Head of Big Tech Accountability Alia Al Ghussain explains the findings.
Palantir’s is an unsuitable partner for NHS England due to significant human rights concerns associated with the company. Palantir has a track record of flagrantly disregarding international law and standards.
Under Viktor Orbán’s government, Hungary’s LGBTI community faced dehumanisation narratives & repressive laws that restricted their freedom of expression and right to non‑discrimination.
Between 2024-2025, it also acquired technologies worth at least US $1.2 million, including social media monitoring tools, facial recognition, and aerial surveillance tools. Together, these policies and technologies amount to a system of mass surveillance.
🚨 A Greek court has convicted four people linked to spyware maker, Intellexa, for illegally accessing private communications.
This landmark ruling should signal the end of impunity in the surveillance industry.

Amnesty’s own research has shown that the deployment of harmful technologies such as facial recognition & automation in the public sector have threatened the right to privacy and social protection in India and have led to discrimination and exclusion of marginalized communities.
A US court ordered Meta to pay $567 million for causing harm to children. The verdict is an important step towards a safer social media for children. By ordering changes to platform features, the ruling recognizes harms children experience online.
🚨The AI Summit in India failed to reign in destructive practices of governments & tech companies. The rhetoric stood in stark contrast with the realities of harmful deployment of AI systems in the country powering an agenda of authoritarian practices.
RT: @channelafrica1 [ON AIR] @FavoredAsa speaks to Stanley Kwenda, Strategic Communications Advisor at Amnesty International, regarding their latest investigation that revealed Predator spyware targeted Teixeira Cândido, a prominent Angolan journalist and advocate for press freedom, in 2024.

Ahead of Brazil’s presidential election @amnesty@mastox.eu submitted @facebook ads, to test @Meta's moderation system but with no intention of publishing them. Over half of the disinformation ads were accepted, while the rest were rejected but not directly for containing disinformation.
RT: @amnestyusa We are finally seeing consequences for those involved in the abuse of surveillance technology.
We hope this landmark ruling signals the end of the era of impunity for the surveillance industry.
While India was lauded by world leaders for its technological progress, the human rights concerns arising out of technology deployment in the country were papered over.
The government in Argentina has implemented sweeping institutional reforms to expand its intelligence capabilities and therefore surveillance mechanisms, through executive decrees and resolutions.
🚨@amnesty@mastox.eu supports the latest briefing by @Medact (an organization bringing together health workers in the UK) urging hospitals to not use Palantir software, demanding that NHS (National Health Services) England cancels the contract entirely. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/03/uk-global-human-rights-and-health-groups-in-new-briefing-urge-hospitals-not-to-use-palantir-software-and-demand-that-nhs-england-cancels-the-contract-entirely/
