What is the logic behind giving a company money for the tariffs?

Well, the logic is the fact that the tariffs were illegal.

The honourable thing to do would be to pay that money back to the customers, but that would make the shareholders sad and grumpy, so it's never going to happen.

It's really weird to me how *literally anything* they say or do is immediately interpreted in the worst possible way here, on Lemmy. Let's get real for a second. Is there a bot problem *on the Internet in general*? That's a resounding "yes". Do we want to do something about it? According to OP - no, not at all. I mean, if OP considers malicious everything that Spez listed, the only remaining course of action is inaction and hoping for the best.

Are you saying that you don't understand the concept of "consent", or that you find it ironic that while erotica/porn exists, some women's lives can be ruined by their nudes being leaked?

If you've never installed Linux before, I would start with something user-friendly, like Kubuntu or Bazzite. Both come with KDE as their main Desktop Environment ("DE"), so you could do what OP did looks-wise. If you're a technical user, and don't hate having to sometimes do things manually, try Garuda Linux - it's Arch-based, but catered very towards Linux newbies and does a lot of hand-holding. I use it and I enjoy it very much. To specifically do what OP did with his DE - KDE comes with the concept of Panels and Widgets. The top bar you see in the screenshot is a Panel. On it, there are (from right to left) the System Tray widget, a Spacer widget, a Digital Clock widget with customised display format (something you can do in the settings of the widget), another Spacer, an Icons-Only Task Manager widget (displays active applications and lets you pin applications - like the Taskbar in Windows or Dock in macOS), and finally the Application Launcher widget (the Start menu equivalent). Everything is pretty heavily customised (presumably with Panel Colorizer? Not sure), so that - out of the box - even with this exact setup copied, yours would look slightly different.

This is somehow controversial, but I firmly believe that all of them, Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Iran, everyone else, deserves an independent nation free of totalitarian dictators or religious fundamentalists.

Enjoy the ride! :)

Oh! You might find this useful. It's a list of various setting changes/fixes I made after switching and encountering various issues, or annoyances. Some of these were under Kubuntu, most are under Garuda, but I don't think anything in there is distro-specific, so it should work on both Debian-based and Arch-based.

Precisely. Any of the listed options is better than a captcha. None of the options are perfect, obviously, we're using yesterday's tech to solve a tomorrow's problem, but it's something, and it doesn't immediately mean "privacy online is dead".

I'm still salty that they killed Cortana. For the short period between being released full-featured and MS gimping it *hard* in my region, it was *the best* assistant out of the bunch, by far. All they had to do was add the option to add the capabilities of Copilot to the existing system and they'd have an actually killer feature.

i think israel should also exist, its absolutely stupid to propose it be removed cause then you have the problem of a bunch of jews having nowhere to go again

And, more importantly, you lose the moral ground on which you get to protest the Palestinian genocide when you're advocating for Israeli genocide.

("you" here is "a person", not you, @AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip)

On the other hand they should be sanctioned and stopped from commiting constant warcrimes and palestinians live their lives in their rightful territory

Absolutely agree. UN forces should secure the borders (as they were originally defined) and consider any settler a terrorist.

The russia situation is a bit different. Theres no real reason for its existance. Its a bunch of russians opressing minorities, they should have their own country if were following the ethnostate idea. At very least european and asian russia should be seperate countries. But yeah thats never happening.

Yup. I kind of hope that their economy crashing will allow the eastern provinces to reach independence, but at the same time I realise that it would be suicide for them. Like, even if they somehow managed to get the money and food to supply and govern themselves, there's no reality in which China doesn't immediately swoop in and grab half of Siberia.

SNOW is a beast of a platform that requires a team of skilled engineers to set up properly. 90% of companies don't hire those engineers and then do a surprisedPikachu.jpg when everything's on fire. But I *did* work at a company that *had* those engineers once, and I'm still in awe at how excellent that system *can be*.

Depends on how you create it. It could be set up that your app talks to the website, and the identity provider, but the identity provider never talks to the website. As in: you get a token from the IP, store it locally, send it out to he website, the website confirms retrieval and logs you in, and then all the logs get purged on your device so they can't be retrieved. The IP side would only see that *someone* has requested access to some of your data (e.g. proof of age, proof of human, maybe citizenship, if the content is region-locked), and that you have agreed to share it. The website would only see the tokens of proof, but not who you actually are. Ironically, the tech behind NFTs might be super helpful with this.

Yup! Which is why institutions that already handle identities (governments, banks, etc) should be involved. The way I see it: an institution verifies your identity as a human and has your personal details (such as DoB). A tool (similar to, e.g. Sweden't BankID) is available to the user. When a website says "you must be 18 years old to access this", a QR code is generated. You scan the code with your tool, and agree to send *only* the information about whether or not you're an adult. Not the DoB, not anything else, just a token of "yup, adult". If a website has a strong anti-bot policy, same same goes for your "proof of human". This can be set up in a way that guarantees the user's privacy (e.g. by just not storing any logs).

Not sure I understand what you mean. Like, you verify the account and then give it away to a bot? My assumption is that the "proof of human" would be a unique identifier, meaning that once you've attached it to an account, you can't use it to verify another.

Did you refuse to read a Reddit post, or fail to understand it? Out of the three options Spez has mentioned, two guarantee privacy. The third is - and he mentions the pitfalls - the use of government issued e-IDs. This is problematic for obvious reasons, however - properly implemented - *can* also guarantee privacy.

What's the alternative? Nobody on the Lemmy side is talking about fixing the AI problem. The only reason why you don't see a flood of LLM content is that we're too small for anyone to give enough of a shit. If we grow enough, we'll get flooded just like any other social media platform, and federation does nothing to protect us from this.

Yeah, narrow down the 3000 years of history to what’s been happening in the last 30, that’s a grown-up thing to do. :) I also would love to hear where in my posts did you see any defence of genocide, because right now it seems like you’re just imagining things and then getting angry at them.

Wrong. Israel is the only one with the capacity to do it successfully. (and let’s ignore here for a moment the fact that “Palestinian Genocide” has been on the tongues of people for at least 30 years, and during that time the population of Gaza has nearly doubled, that’s besides the point right now) Hamas is absolutely attempting to commit genocide, and if given the tools, they wouldn’t bat an eyelid before pulling the trigger. It just so happens that the best they can do is murder some kids on a concert or fling rockets at crop fields and cities.

I’m fairly new to Linux, so I might be missing something obvious, but I’m super confused by some of these. Photos, the image viewer that works both on desktops and mobiles Not available for either Android or iOS. Merkuro was built with the idea to be usable on desktop, on mobile and everything in between Not available for either Android or iOS. So, what do they mean by “usable on (…) mobile”? Is it only for mobile Linux distros?

Linux users are incredible in their belief that issues of privacy, security, or data autonomy will push the masses away from what they’re used to (OSX/Windows, Facebook/Reddit, etc) and towards better options (Linux, Lemmy, Mastodon, etc) No, mate, absolutely nothing is gonna happen to Windows. It’s gonna be perfectly fine. If we’re lucky, there will be a 1-3% dip in user base towards Linux, but there’s exactly 0% chance for a mass exodus that would make the upper management stop and think for a second.

How would you even legislate that? “You can only use Linux if you’re a registered business”? And how hard is it to register a one-person business in the US? “You can only use Linux if your business has over X number of employees”? So make a non-profit business that “hires” anyone who wants to use Linux.

Israel is murdering children daily, intentionally. Please explain how that is complex? Reducing the whole problem to “Israel is murdering kids” is, ironically, childish. Do you think that adults are not suffering over there? Does kids dying diminish the deaths of adults? I don’t think it does. Fixing that problem is not “just stop murdering children”. Should Israel respect the ceasefire and let humanitarian aid in? Absolutely true, unequivocally. Does that have any bearing on the fact that fundamentalists of the region (on both sides) will still do everything in their power to cause chaos and death, and further divide between the people living in the region? Also absolutely true. And that’s why this is a “complex political situation”. Because fundamentalists in Israel want to eliminate Palestinians, fundamentalists in Palestine want to eliminate Israel, russia and Iran are funding the latter to sow chaos and destabilise the region, Saudis and the West are supporting the former because Israel is the stronger power and overall more stable (if nothing else: it had a couple of elections since 2006), and there’s probably a billion other elements at play here.

Why don’t you just admit you want to whatabout into justifying genocide? Yeah, it might look like that if you’re stupid or also a fundamentalist. My position is that both Israelis and Palestinians have a right to live there and since they can’t figure it out on their own, the UN should have the capacity to step in, provide a buffer, and kick out the settler criminals, ideally hang Netanyahu and whoever is in charge of Hamas, and then ensure both sides sit separated for as long as it takes for Palestine to normalise as a country. You, I take it, are of the opinion that since Israel is the stronger of the two, Hamas has the right to murder them indiscriminately in their “fight for freedom”?

I still cry myself to sleep after the premature death of Windows Mobile, so I use Launcher10, which brings the Tiles back to life. I started experimenting with a super minimalist Folder Launcher, but it doesn’t seem ready for release yet, a couple of crucial (IMO) features (like default settings, bulk edits, proper apps list) are still missing. There’s also Fossify Launcher Beta, which is an open source launcher. It’s fairly basic, but gets the job done. A super cool feature of the Fossify apps (since two releases ago) is the option to set your own fonts from a file, so I’m running their Calendar, Phone, Contacts, Calculator, etc., all with the Nothing Phone’s dot font.
