Kurki- ja laulujoutsenparin pesäntekoa lähekkäin – A pair of cranes and whooper swans are building nests close to each other

Both pairs (I assume the same birds, as they are territorial) nested quite close to each other last year as well, now even closer (maybe 20 m). These whooper swans really don't seem to be bothered by cranes, but geese and other swans are fiercely chased away. The cranes have found the wetland only a few years ago and this year there is a second nesting. It was nice to watch the incubation of both pairs, and how they changed incubation shifts and took care of the condition of the nest. While the swans have a large nest pile, the cranes have a pretty flat pile of straw and plants.

Pillipiipari – Pied Piper

The water vole likes all kinds of vegetarian food, and now especially water horsetail, as fresh ones haven't yet grown. This one lives on the edge of a ditch and digs long tunnels in the ground. The water vole dives in the ditch and I have once seen mating in the water. Probably in nest corridors in general, as there is a risk of being caught by the predator.

Neitoperhonen – Peacock butterfly

The butterfly has chosen a territory from which it drives other butterflies away, waiting for the female to arrive. In the meantime, it warms up in the sun and sucks nectar from the willow.

Whooper swans often give the impression of being a bit stiff, especially when they raise their necks to observe threats around them. But their necks bend wonderfully, and here is a really nice composition! :-)

Linnut kiisivät korkealla ilmassa ja kanahaukka ajoi mehiläishaukkaa takaa. Mehiläishaukka puolustautui jalat ojossa ja ehkä vanhana lintuna tunsi kanahaukan metkut. Vanha kanahaukka on vaarallinen, mutta tänä kesänä syntynyt lintu on hyvin kokematon, se vasta opettelee saalistamista. (07/2026) Birds were flying high in the air and a goshawk was chasing a honey buzzard. The honey buzzard defended itself with its legs out and perhaps as an old bird it knew the goshawk's tricks.
