@sarahjamielewis@mastodon.social I started chasing the references to this World Cup code, and wow there sure is a lot of stuff in here that doesn't belong. It's hard to decide which thread to pull on first.
A great thing about the base browser project that @sarahjamielewis@mastodon.social started is that it prompted me to acquire the ability to build Firefox from source. A web browser is one of the most important pieces of software in the world today, and it's very empowering to be able to build one myself from source and then to modify it as I like.

@mwichary This is excellent! It's like a "debugger" for text, peeling back layers of mystery that are usually awkward to access. I love the idea of open-sourcing it; that could make it self-hostable, which would be great.

@mwichary Self-hostable means it's possible to run one's own instance of the system, either on a different public server, or on a private server on a local network. That offers various benefits, including data privacy and the ability to run local modifications to the software (including the development of new revisions).
When I'm looking into building a new project from source, and the procedure for setting up its build environment relies on curl | sh, my immediate reaction is that maybe I'm not so interested in that project after all.
