The haemonculus, the boss of this warband, is finished. Two more wracks about 60% done each, they're up next
Wtf I edited the post and the pictures disappeared
Two more wracks done. Also, these are technically the first ones that are done done. I realized that I needed to use matte varnish on these guys to prevent paint chipping. And since it's very difficult to tell the difference between a varnished one and a still bare one, I decided to go ahead and do the basing as well for the last step, so I can tell which ones are properly finished.
More wracks! Going back to one per photo, so lots of them incoming. I think I'm going to paint the remaining ones in pairs. I did three this time and I felt like I was racing the paint drying in the palette on the third one.
LGS had a buy 2 get 1 special today for their 13th birthday. Picked up a razorwing jet, a squad of incubi, and a Tau broadside, as well as a bunch of paints and washes.
Lightbox came in and I'm a lot happier with these pics. Feel like the details are more visible and the focus is better because it isn't fighting with the paint bottles behind it
Does anyone have the chart with like artistic execution and artistic perception trading places as both climb? Because I feel like I'm in that zone where I perceive how much better I could be but can't execute on it. Watching youtube videos and getting pumped up about techniques and then feeling stuck on the actual in-progress work
Anyway, I'm about 75% done with the Talos but I also assembled the razorwing and did like 15% of the painting (stuff that would be harder/impossible to paint when fully assembled). It's going to have a different color scheme, the one I plan to use for Kabalite warriors when I eventually get some of those. Dark eldar raiding parties include multiple factions because the kabals, wych cults, Haemonculus covens, and incubus shrines are non-overlapping parts of society, so I plan to have different colors for each (that should hopefully look good together) because I am that kind of sicko.
But anyway, the thing that has me frustrated and anxious to level up was a youtube about priming with an airbrush in multiple shades from different angles to get lighting laid down on the model before you even put color on it. This seems like a really awesome technique that I am unable to do anything with because I don't have an airbrush and haven't used one since high school anyway, so I doubt I could even get much of anywhere with one. But my friend who's doing this with me does have an airbrush, so I hope to visit him maybe this weekend and get some practice with his before buying one myself (sometime down the road when I have discretionary income, or any income for that matter, again)
I think I need to put the Warhammer away for a little while. I just don't have the motivation or energy for it right now, due to the aforementioned skill/perception gap and, y'know, constant pain from ongoing health crisis. Been feeling vaguely guilty about diving into this new project instead of doing anything with my gunpla backlog anyway, so I think I'll switch to that until after I get home from surgery. Requires less focus and is easier to see progress even if I don't get after it for very long so I think it's something I should do
@funkula@goblin.camp getting some cheap, big makeup brushes and drybrushing the lighter shades on is what i do for that instead of airbrushing - way cheaper and easier to clean
@funkula@goblin.camp the two techniques that are easy and create great looking minis are glazing (thin transparent layers, usually darker) and drybrush (paint so thick it is almost dry, very little of it, applied like you're dusting, with a fucked-up brush). Glaze to give shadows and dimension, drybrush texture and highlights
@funkula@goblin.camp these are great because the sculpture does all the work. Watery paint pools in the deep parts of the figure, and when it dries, boom, natural-looking shading.
@Sindemore@monads.online I'm doing a bit with each already. I haven't really found the sweet spot between "just painting really sloppy" and "no discernible effect whatsoever" for drybrushing tho
@Sindemore@monads.online and I've had a decent bit of luck with glazing. On the wracks I painted the skin, painted the pink lines for surgical scars/wounds, and then glazed with another layer of the skin base color to soften them and make them look healed over. I've also got a few different washes for texture but I haven't been super confident in deploying them yet. The big success I've had with those is the exposed bone but I haven't really tried with skin or armor (though the armor is so dark I'm not sure it would accomplish anything)
@Thomas yeah the register line went halfway around the perimeter of the store, it was hopping in there
And I was there about an hour after opening and there was already a dent in inventory, both of the battleforces I had been 👀 ing at were gone, which is a good thing
