Meet Cute in Manhattan: give Kendall Leary a chance
Meet Cute in Manhattan is a romcom inside a romcom. An out of work actor gets a gig in a commercial and meets a woman. Then he writes a script and pitches it. The script is about an actor meeting someone while filming a commercial.
Meet Cute in Manhattan stars Terence Chen as the out of work actor, Jason. He meets an architect named Nora (Kendall Leary) in a coffee shop and convinces her to be in a dating app commercial with him.
Kendall Leary is the real reason to watch this movie. She hasn’t been in much and you’ve probably never heard of her, but she’s got something. The camera loves her. She’s a natural. She’s magnetic. Somebody somewhere needs to put her in something big.
In Meet Cute in Manhattan, the dating app ads that Jason and Nora make go viral. They get hired to do more ads and are thrown together a lot. Jason’s on and off girlfriend Chloe (Amanda Shi) gets jealous because Jason and Nora have such convincing chemistry in the ads.
Nora’s boyfriend Kip (Martin K. Lewis) gets jealous because Jason and Nora have such convincing chemistry in the ads.
It’s all up in the air for a while as to who will end up with who and whether Jason will have success in acting and Nora will have success in architecture. Meanwhile Jason is pitching the story of their relationship as a movie. There are minor plot lines about Nora’s dreams as an architect and Jason’s family. There’s even a tiny romcom between the couple Jason is pitching his movie idea to. It’s a busy plot.
The film was directed by Karen Morey. She and Terence Chen wrote the movie together. It isn’t a big must see movie I recommend to everyone, but I do want to shout Kendall Leary’s name from the rooftops.
The film is widely available; Fawesome, Plex, Prime Video, The Roku Channel, and Pluto TV are all streaming it now. If you do watch it, tell me if you think I’m right about Kendall Leary.
Spread the love
