Reading through the 2026 state ballot information booklet for #Colorado and wow, we have some trumpian doozies in here!! If you're a voter in Colorado READ THE BOOKLET and the for/against arguments. The amount of pro-#TABOR boilerplate crap is amazing. The people who supply the words don't even try anymore, they just lead with "massive tax increase" and "reduce TABOR refund checks" which apparently dog-whistles with the 12% hardcore conservative minority in the state so why put in any actual effort! I've always loved the; "Get those kids off the street during the day, I feel threatened" vs "I don't support increased taxes to pay for schools, my kids are already grown up!"arguments. This election we have plenty of those! Then the anti-trans proposals, blame-the-victim #reagan era drug proposal, whew, it's exhausting!

”In 1980, Republican president Ronald Reagan won the White House by promising that tax cuts would create such dramatic economic growth that Americans would be able to continue to fund popular programs despite those cuts. …the promise that tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations would pay for themselves never materialized. Instead, the national debt rose dramatically.” —Heather Cox Richardson, August 5, 2026 https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/august-5-2026 #reagan #ronaldreagan #usa

The Atlantic | So Nobody Is Going to Pay Taxes Now? by Annie Lowrey AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The article warns that America’s fiscal foundation is eroding as Congress runs trillion‑dollar deficits while simultaneously encouraging a nationwide tax revolt, slashing rates and expanding loopholes that make many Americans view income‑tax bills as unfair. It traces how both Republicans and Democrats have perpetuated a system that favors the wealthy—through historic tax cuts, targeted deductions, and recent proposals to eliminate taxes for specific groups—while the tax base shrinks due to an aging population and rising mandatory spending on Social Security, Medicare, and other services. This combination of reduced revenue, soaring interest costs on existing debt, and politically driven tax policies jeopardizes the nation’s long‑term solvency, making it increasingly difficult to fund essential programs or pursue ambitious policy initiatives without broadening the tax base or raising rates on high‑income earners. Vineland is a 1990[a] postmodern novel by Thomas Pynchon set in California in 1984, the year of President Ronald Reagan's reelection. Through flashbacks, its characters, who lived through the 1960s, account for the free spirit of rebellion of that decade, and describe the traits of the "fascistic Nixonian repression" and the war on drugs that clashed with it. The book portrays transformations in U.S. society from the 1960s to the 1980s. - Wikipedia My first Thomas Pynchon novel, despite having meant to read him for decades. A dense, intense read, but very worthwhile, and whilst about Reagan's Amerikka and what preceded it is nonetheless very relevant to the events we are living through today. I look forward to reading the loose adaptation, One Battle After Another. #ThomasPynchon #Reading #Novels #USA #America #Nixon #Reagan #WaronDrugs
