Today in #openZFSmastery:
"Lucas can now manage his own mistakes. Jude, of course, must manage the mistake of giving Lucas a jail."

Today's #60SecondsOfWIP is out! From #OpenZFSMastery: "Lucas is Incompetent or Evil."
At https://mwl.io/archives/24997 or wherever mediocre podcasts are sold.
Writing about containers and jails today for #openzfsmastery.
Language management is a big part of writing a tech book. Techies are both notoriously bad at language, and notoriously picky about it. Containers and jails are types of lightweight virtual machines. I don't want to keep repeating "lightweight virtual machines" multiple times in a paragraph, so I need a good short punchy word.
I could abbreviate and call them LVMs, but Linux folks have different associations for that abbreviation.
The current attempt is to call them "lightweight virtual machine instances" 2-3 times to build an association in the reader's brain, then call them "instances" for the remainder of the chapter. It wouldn't work for a longer piece, but I think I can get away with it for half a chapter.
Got the #openzfsmastery section on privilege delegation completed.
Tomorrow, I figure out delegating datasets to containers. Seems there's little integration, everything gets delegated by hand?
Sponsorships are still open on this silly thing: https://mwl.io/sponsor
okay, I got the #openzfsmastery boot loader chapter fixed. Definitely done now.
Calling it for the day. Take a few hours off this evening to read to the rodents.
Me, this morning: Yay, I finished the #openzfsmastery boot environment chapter yesterday, I can move on.
Me, getting to desk and seeing the boot environment chapter: oh no.
that's the Boot Environment chapter of #openzfsmastery done! Covers FreeBSD and Proxmox.
I think my Saturday's done. It's pajama time.
#bhyve with #ZFS rollback makes testing boot environments for #openzfsmastery sooo much easier. Snapshots on the hypervisor. Snapshots in the VM. Snapshots EVERYWHERE. #sysadmin
Working on #openzfsmastery, trying to fake boot environments with Proxmox. Because Proxmox integrates ZFS as a first-class filesystem.
It's going swimmingly.
You can donate to extend my suffering. https://mwl.io/sponsor
"In Linux, running ZFS-on-root is an advanced skill.¹
¹ You can tell it's an advanced skill by the way senior sysadmins say, 'oh, it's not that hard.'"

I have a recurrent typo in #openzfsmastery: "snapshat."
Apparently my subconscious has opinions.
"If you have no ability to add actual storage, sparse volumes are like cocaine: they let you avoid an immediate capacity problem while creating a much larger future problem. Avoid them." #openzfsmastery #nonotryagain
spend several hours today working on #openzfsmastery. Lots of organizational stuff, language work, and even a few pages of actual prose!
"Yes, you could replace all the disks simultaneously, if you’d like to shatter your day with a glorious festival of I/O contention." #openzfsmastery
Wrote about log and cache devices today, and expanding pools by replacing disks with larger disks.
The book is underway! I'd appreciate your help keeping the lights on as I finish it. https://mwl.io/sponsor

'The computational engineering team assured you that the data on the pool named “disposable” was disposable. They swore they would never put anything important on it. Three weeks later, someone called to request you restore a vital file. When you said you didn’t back up the disposable share and that the data there was completely unprotected, they informed you that the “disposable” files were, in fact, essential.
It would be maddening, if before that first meeting you hadn’t predicted exactly this. To your supervisor. In writing.'
dived into Linux kernel modules today and got some missing tidbits of #openzfsmastery filled in so @allanjude@mastodon.social can take a look.
But I also got to use the phrase "Oracle taint," so the day wasn't a total loss.
I'd appreciate your support writing this book. https://mwl.io/sponsor
"Oracle casts a toxic cloud over technology and their presence in open source is a toxic taint."
Torn between "too far" and "make sure this sentence retains ambiguity over which definition of 'taint' I'm using." #openzfsmastery
Today in #openzfsmastery: replacing failed drive s0d1-NCC-1701D with new drive s0d5-NCC-1701E.
Yes, I'm easily amused. Or desperate for amusement. One of those.
Anyway, you could sponsor this thing and help me feed the rats while I finish writing it. https://mwl.io/sponsor
"Lucas has run high-volume netflow collectors, where data is written all day every day for as long as the doomed disks endure. He considered adjusting metadata redundancy when the disk couldn’t keep up. If it helped, he copied new data off to more fortunate storage every hour and started budgeting for faster storage."
#openzfsmastery datasets chapter done at last! On to scrubs, repairs, and pool changes.
Want your name in the book? Sponsors get that! https://mwl.io/sponsor
