Mattarella: “No to a single way of thinking, it is a tool of oppression”
AGI - Culture as a barrier against the threat of authoritarianism and uniform thinking, which is “a tool of oppression,” to which one must contrast freedom of expression and “the value of dissent, which is even more precious when denied.”
Sergio Mattarella arrived in Pordenone for the closing ceremony of the 27th edition of Pordenonelegge, and, during the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Republic, he recalled that it was the ballot paper, “the disarmed weapon of legitimate confrontation” that drove the country forward after the years of dictatorship and war, and that “the engines of history” were the dialogue between cultures and the clash of ideas. Guarantees protected by the Constitution and a commitment to the Republic that must “contribute to ensure that these rights are recognized by all people, and by all peoples.”
The Alarm for Illiberal Democracy and the Defense of Pluralism
The President of the Republic – today awarded the honorific title Ambassador of Freedom – expresses concern about the emergence “at a global level” of “the temptation of illiberal democracy” and criticizes “uniformity,” which he says “suits autocracy and dictatorships and is synonymous with stagnation.” "It is pluralism of opinions – he emphasizes – that in democracies prevents power, even digital power, from fossilizing into a truth it seeks to impose. The right to express opinions is a barrier against arbitrariness; it is a driving force for renewal.”
Witnesses of Human Rights and Homage to Electrolux Workers
In his speech, the Head of State then cited Mahsa Amini, the 2023 Sakharov Prize winner from the European Parliament, Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and the women of Herat: witnesses who “indicate that the struggle for rights is far from over or even wished for, by some, a retreat.” In closing, he also addressed the Electrolux workers, involved in a difficult trade union dispute: they represent, among applause, “the ethics of work.”

Woman Life Freedom, a movement silenced by warmongers?
THE BLOGGER’S CORNER. Anyone who believes in a regime change with the help of missiles and bombs presents themselves as an interpreter of the latest protest movements in Iran, starting with that born from the death of Mahsa Amini. But others denounce the betrayal of that idea of tolerant, peaceful, inclusive, and rights-respecting freedom, starting with Narges Mohammadi.
