Hello, and welcome! 👋 We're the Forming Worlds Lab at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, University of Groningen. We study how rocky planets form and evolve, and what makes a world habitable, from early magma oceans 🌋 to the atmospheres of distant exoplanets 🪐. We model planetary interiors and atmospheres together, and we build the open-source PROTEUS framework our science runs on, in the open. 💻 Over the coming days, we'll introduce our group members one by one, and the research projects each of them leads. After that, expect regularly: 🪐 the wonder of rocky planets and alien worlds 📄 recent papers and science results 🎤 conference updates and talks 📸 life in the Forming Worlds Lab It's an exciting time to explore other worlds. Glad to have you here, follow along! 🌍 Web: https://formingworlds.space Code: https://github.com/FormingWorlds PROTEUS: https://proteus-framework.org #Exoplanets #PlanetaryScience #Astronomy #Astrodon #OpenScience

Can planets form around supermassive black holes? 🌌 New simulations suggest the dusty disks around actively feeding supermassive black holes could produce enormous planet-mass objects — with some potentially growing massive enough to become stars. What if a rocky planet didn't have a core? That can't happen, can it? It should differentiate... well, there might be a set of circumstances under which that might happen. If it does, they're going to be a bit strange. As to how they might be weird. They might deform more due to rotation and gravitational distribution; they might have an unstable or no magnetic field, and the minerals on their surface would definitely be exotic. University of Oxford study found that planets 1,113 light years away are 1,000 times bigger than Earth, but lighter than cotton candy

Une étude de l’université d’Oxford a trouvée que des planètes à 1113 années-lumières sont 1000 plus grosses que la Terre, mais plus légères que de la barbe à papa

The geology of chocolate bars... It's more than 50 years since we left the Moon and, as far as I can see, we still have no equivalent for the prefix in the word 'Geology', the science of the physical structure of the Earth and its rocks. We have Exo-geology, and lunar geology and planetary geology but no xxxology where xxx is a prefix denoting the study of non-Earths. Who can help me out, here? #Science #Exoplanets #Geologyhttps://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/resources/project/describe-rocks-like-a-nasa-scientist/
