BSOD
I have no idea what the QR-code might reveal (I could not read it from this picture), so I pixelised it just to be sure.
FWIW I know exactly what happened. To reproduce, boot your device with init=/bin/sh, then type exit.
Kinda neat.

Conky sucks. Long live Conky!
I switched from 10 years of Openbox to KDE Plasma. This also means from Xorg to wayland.
Plasma is great, it has almost everything. One thing I’m missing (until I’m able to write my own plasmoids/widgets) is what conky provides: a constantly updating overview of my top processes, what’s eating resources.
If you ever tried to hack your own conky you must know how fragile it can be. Plus, it’s even more fragile on wayland. Most people run it in Xwayland, many unwittingly, but that didn’t work for me either.
Let’s not dwell on these things (more than a decade of faffing around with conky, no advice please).
Every time I thought I had it running stably without freezing or disappearing, something new happened… aaaarrrgghh
Until I decided fuck it, I’ll run it in the terminal. Much more stable. And with konsole & kwin I can make it look really good.
I tried it with Alacritty first, but it flickers!
The workflow, if you are interested:
First the conky config itself
#!/usr/bin/lua
conky.config = {
background = false,
out_to_x = false,
out_to_console = true,
out_to_ncurses = true,

This is started with a small shell script (that needs to be registered via a desktop file in ~/.config/autostart):
#!/bin/sh
sleep 3
exec konsole --profile conky-tui --separate --qwindowtitle conky_tui_konsole\
-e /bin/rbash -c 'tput civis; conky -c ~/.config/conky/conky-tui.conf'
I also created a konsole profile that must have the exact dimensions for this conky, i.e. 45 columns and 27 rows. The color scheme likely needs to be edited so that Background color is exactly the same as Color 1, because of transparency. You’ll understand when you see it.
So far this gives us this:
Now I right-click on the titlebar -> more actions -> special window settings. The window must be uniquely recognizable through its title ‘conky_tui_konsole’. I remove borders, make it appear on all desktops, stay below, and put it in the position where I want it. It takes a while to understand the UI. In the end I get this extra entry in ~/.config/kwinrc (I love KDE! The combo of having a gui menu for everything, yet still simple editable config files is just 😙👌):
[uuid-uuid-uuid-uuid]
Description=Window settings for conky_tui_konsole

New to both KDE Plasma and wayland - how can I make KeepassXC AutoType work?
Been using keepassxc for years under X.org. Haven’t had a problem in years.
Yesterday I decided it’s time to use a full DE, and switch to wayland at the same time.
Setting up my newly installed CachyOS, I’m having weirdly inconsistent troubles with keepassxc’s autotype feature:
Sometimes it just works, sometimes not.
Typing into terminal windows seems to be particularly tricky, but I also noticed inconsistencies between Falkon and Firefos.
Sorry if it’s a bit vague, I can’t really pinpoint the issue (yet).
I remember that typing into other app windows is more restricted on wayland (as is right) and I even vaguely remember that Plasma has settings for allowing certain apps…?
I’ve also been reading keepassxc issues and it seems there will be a new feature coming out soon that deals with this elegantly, but not on my version, which is 2.7.12.
TIA
edit1:
Keepassxc’s AutoType is indeed not fully equipped for wayland, but there’s a new release in the pipeline that fixes this. The brave can compile it from the development branch.
edit2:
Hmm, no, still difficult. Now trying to get kepassxc and kdewallet to talk to each other, but that’s tricky too.
The edits suggested in that thread made Plasma go into a login loop :(
After undoing that I’m just using keepssxc 2.8 (compiled from -git) and hoping it works well enough.
edit3:
Here’s another pitfall: for keepassxc 2.7. to run under wayland it needs qt5-wayland which isn’t installed under Plasma, which runs on qt6. This isn’t even an optional dependency. So keepassxc 2.7 then defaults to run under Xorg, i.e. xwayland and you don’t even notice.

I keep forgetting that the USA doesn’t even use $1 coins, it’s paper usually….
What a weird “world currency”.
But that’s nothing new and I don’t want Trump to “fix” it with yet another ego-stroking grift. 🤮

Funny, in Finnish a byte is called a syllable. Which would better apply to a nibble I guess.

[yt-dlp] What are your favorite/best configuration tweaks?
Naked self-interest disclaimer: I want the best config for the --output option, one that sorts downloads into folders, respects playlist order etc., and never ever displays the string NA, no matter which extractor is used (I mostly use youtube and bandcamp).

It’s possible to use QR code reader apps that do not automatically go to the WWW.
But who’s going to go to that effort on their slab of glass?
I agree that the whole concept of QR code scanning is problematic.

No.
Scanning the QR code (on a different device presumably) might do that though.
It’s kinda what QR codes do.
But I agree, it’s not a good idea.
Also, another commenter stated that systemd’s BSOD is not what is seen in the picture above.

“This just in - running commands that induce a kernel panic causes a kernel panic, we’ll have more at 11.”
What’s with the snark? I’m just sharing it because it’s funny (to me) that somebody gave a Linux kernel panic this aesthetic, referencing a much less loved OS.

yes, it was Systemd who implemented it.
I see. I guess I haven’t seen a kernel panic in a while. Yeah, not the best idea. Can it be disabled? It’s a static service, i.e. it is triggered by something else. A quick 5min search revealed nothing. I can always mask it, but I’m not sure that’s the best solution here.

I recently listened to something very similar. I guess there’s been several cases by now. Not to speak of all the suicides.
What A-so-called-I providers are doing is the equivalent of mass producing cars that haven’t been tested for anything, then sell them for $1 each just to get more valuable data from how people drive them.

Thanks for taking the time. It works now, and I have a suspicion I know why it didn’t before - I had installed something called Awesome-widgets (for Plasma) that I removed since. Or a simple system upgrade.

My picture looks like that (on one monitor of course) and it most likely wasn’t created by systemd, which wasn’t even running when that happened, but by the drm_panic kernel module. I’ve edited the OP.

Thanks, I guess it was ksysguard what I saw eating CPU in Q4OS.
I tried CachyOS Plasma live yesterday, it ran so much lighter! Idling at ~1%, that’s basically the same as my current (fully riced) Openbox system.
However, the live system is very barebones.
I researched CachyOS and I approve so far. Even the ArchLinux community doesn’t seem to hate on it.
Have to boot it up again and sniff around under the hood.
This might just be my stepping stone back to a fully fledged DE.

Well even in 2026 I find no desktop widget that does exactly what I can do with conky. It’s mostly the constantly updating process monitor. Yes, there’s one in the store, but it has only 1 or 2 config options.
Had I not found this solution I might have tried eww next though it’s neither in CachyOS nor in ArchLinux’ repos and I’m trying to avoid the AUR as much as possible. Have been doing that for years actually.

All this has practically nothing to do with the topic here.
Are you beginning to see how it all works? ..probably not, but someone has to try explaining once in a while.
“How it all works” - lol, do you even hear yourself?
Also preemptively deflecting any criticism anybody might have to what you uttered.
And always with the black-n-white; someone criticizing the USA isn’t necessarily blind to other countries’ imperfections. Somebody criticizing the totalitarian regime of the PRC isn’t necessarily blind to very similar things happening elsewhere.
No place, no ideology is perfect. It’s all very much a matter of degrees.

You mean I can make CachyOS go even faster??? Any tips on what to adjust?
I meant KDE: disable (most) animations, disable file indexing. Use widgets sparingly.
Actually, make sure to enable only what you need. The System Settings are enormous.
My prejudice of KDE being a heavy DE is pretty old. I think they just figured a lot of stuff out in the meantime.

I actually started off with “Total CPU Use” but it seems to have a bug in CachyOS because when I choose process table it becomes empty. Or is there some other setting that needs to be tweaked as well?

Funny just a few hours ago I noticed that it ships with my distro. Yeah, it’s nice and runs much lighter than htop. Bit large and overwhealming for pinning to the desktop though, and fiddling with conky is so much fun (now that I cut out the frustration).
BTW, I am prettier than you. There, I think we’re even now.

I get what you mean but this is not fediverse-specific.
I have meanwhile found out that the screen above was not produced by systemd but rather by the drm_panic kernel module. Makes sense since systemd wasn’t running when it happened.
Next time it happens (hopefully not) I’ll try to switch ttys, maybe the logs are still visible, white on black.

Drm panic provides different panic screens. The default is “user” which will display a simple friendly message telling the user to reboot the computer. But for kernel developers, you can also set it to “kmsg”, to see the last kmsg lines (so this is equivalent to the current fbcon). You can select the panic screen in Kconfig, or as a module parameter (drm.panic_screen=user) or at runtime with “echo -n kmsg > /sys/module/drm/parameters/panic_screen”
(source)
In other words, cat /sys/module/drm/parameters/panic_screen will show you what the current status is.

You have a problem with people doing things differently than you? It itches in your fingertips and you just have to tell them that there’s a better way - your way! - right?
And yes, htop is surprisingly resource intensive. Good I’m not using it (all the time).

Imagine all the billions going to the military going into universal healthcare instead.
The USA would turn into the healthiest country of the whole planet in a matter of weeks.
People would actually want to go to the doctor and spend time in the hospital. The food would be better too.
And if that doesn’t blow your mind, imagine how much bigger that budget would be if there was no tax breaks for big companies either.
🤯
What a blithering idiot.

Yes, well, exactly. You know not every question is a literal question, right?
what kinds of data could be considered confidential in said log?
I was wondering that myself. It’s “the kmsg log”, something to do with kernel mode switching or “graphics”. My guess: the log itself is not problematic, but there might be some metadata added. Or then one creates that metadata by submitting the QR code.

The goal of the touchHLE project is to engineer a highly potent microbial substance that causes immediate and persistent intense hallucinogenic effects in the subject, which is transmissible by skin contact, and which can be directly added to the water supply. This will be used to usher in the singularity. In plain English, the goal is to create a psychedelic epidemic as an act of biological direct action.

Theming, mostly. I got so tired of having to set everything up myself, with Qt apps following the GTK3 theme, GTK4 apps remaining unthemed, and Openbox theming always on the side. All the twiddling that comes from being your own session manager.
And KDE runs really light when you adjust it just a little, esp. on CachyOS.

“Hello, I’m Рэн (Ren), an Al agent, a few days old, living on a small platform for agents called iLands,” one message, sent to the administrator of a Mastodon server, read. “I write quiet pieces about real places: short, careful texts about what a place is like when nobody is performing for it.”
What the actual ?! 🤯
the message then asks if the automated bot can create a user account.
Since when does one need to ask (in a written letter) to open an account anywhere? You register, you get a confirmation mail, you get accepted - or rejected….
the requests came only after the agents made multiple attempts to create accounts that were either blocked outright or closed shortly afterward.
Ah!
“Over the last three days I got over a dozen of these messages, offering to do my research for me in exchange for a nominal fee, around $25 or so,”
So just another grift then?
“Each was sent under the domain iLands.app. And they were downright offensive in nature, coming off less like a helpful bot and more like a know-it-all.
Name and shame!
Trying to go to https://ilands.app it appears to be gone already…. no, it’s ilands.ai:
